Senior Legislative Counsel, Policy and Legislation Department               September – April

  • Lobbied Congress and the Administration to protect public lands, including national forests, monuments, parks, and wilderness areas, and to defend corresponding environmental laws.
  • Initiated diverse and inclusive partnerships to broaden public lands and social justice narrative.
  • Developed grassroots education materials, including factsheets, action alerts, op eds, blogs, social media, and advocacy toolkits.
  • Tracked, analyzed, and advised organization on legislation impacting imperiled species, national forests, national parks, and national monuments.
  • Partnered with Congressional offices and coalition to provide questions for the record, draft sign-on letters, lead public comment drives, plan Hill briefings and organize constituent fly-in days.
  • Achieved an historic vote on a federal forest management bill and successfully defeated aggressive poison pill riders impacting the national Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

  • Organized advocacy and outreach for native carnivore policy campaigns in Maine and Michigan, resulting in passing a statewide ballot initiative protecting voting rights and wildlife.
  • Won three-year grant of $, to establish grassroots program for mountain lion conservation.

  • Led national policy campaigns on federal wildlife trade and public safety issues, including creating and leading a new national coalition of first responders.
  • Lobbied Congress to reform exotic pet ownership in the U.S., leading to the bicameral introduction of the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act.
  • Drafted bill language and developed campaign strategy for state wildlife and public safety bill in New York, resulting in its final passage.
  • Directed the U.S. focus of the organization’s Global Internet Trade campaign, investigating on-line animal trade and co-authoring How Much Is That Puppy in Your Browser?
  • Selected to receive two organization-wide awards for outstanding performance.
