REPRESENTATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Counseling

  • While at Counseling and Recovery Services of Oklahoma (CRSOK), started and facilitated a self empowerment group.  Group members learned about self-esteem, healthy relationships, assertiveness, positive thinking, conflict resolution, and communication skills.  Members walked away with a better understanding of themselves and a healthier way of relating with others.

  • While at CRSOK, also gained experience with a relapse prevention group. Shadowed the lead therapist at first and then began co-facilitating.  Supported the lead facilitator by supplying examples, starting the sessions, and helping to remember important information.
  •  Also while at CRSOK, met weekly with clients.  Gained experience in helping clients with depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and schizophrenia.  Also gained experience with the mental health court program, psychosocial rehabilitation, and in making initial assessments of new clients.
  • Also at CRSOK, worked as a team player by learning how to manage the business office.  Due to various reasons, the business office specialist could not always be there.  However, new clients still needed to complete the initial paperwork in order to begin treatment.  As a result of helping out in that office, clients were able to begin the process of treatment, and other staff members did not have to leave their tasks to assist.
  • While at Laureate, took regular rotation in facilitating a psychoeducational group for patients. Topics included coping skills, sleep hygiene, assertiveness, and anger management.  In addition to presenting new information to members, my style permitted the patients to relate their experiences and knowledge concerning the topic.  As a result, group members learned from each other and felt empowered as they realized they had good things to say.
  • At Laureate, helped patients in a state of psychosis.  Assisted with daily hygiene activities and meals, reassured them that they are safe, and distracted them from disturbing hallucinations.  As a result, they received an appropriate level of care during these episodes.  Most made rapid progress towards recovery as their medicines took effect.
  • Reduced anxiety for new patients by greeting them and explaining to them our daily routines and where items are located on the unit.  As a result, they began to relax and enter into the unit\'s activities.
  • As a psychiatric technician, de-escalated situations and talked patients through difficult moments. For instance, sat with patients and encouraged them to resist hurting themselves or others.  This included prompting them to take deep breathes, active listening, and discussing possible consequences and alternative solutions.  As a result, safety promises were obtained and fewer patients had to be restrained.
  • Stopped attempts at staff-splitting by finding out the reasons for decisions and summarizing that to the patient. If further discussion was desired, patient was referred to the staff member who made the decision.  As a result, there was more consistency in procedures, which increased a sense of support among team members.
