Texas Botanical Gardens and Native American Interpretive Center, Goldthwaite, Texas (2009-11)

 

Researched and compiled private foundation and government grant strategies to support construction and operation of the Texas Botanical Gardens and Native American Interpretive Center in downtown rural Goldthwaite as a community cultural and educational facility. Facilitated the development of start-up operating and sustainability plans for the new Center. Created a proposal template that is being customized to meet the guidelines of all prospects identified in the grant strategy. To date, a $10,000 grant has been awarded by the Shield-Ayres Foundation and a $2,500 grant has been awarded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

 

City of San Marcos, Texas (2006; 2008-11)

 

Developed proposal narrative for application to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which awarded Assistance to Firefighters Grant funds of $297,130 to purchase a mobile hazmat tanker, car fire mock-up and exercise/fitness training equipment for the San Marcos Fire Rescue Department.

 

Developed collaborative grant proposals to the U.S. Department of Justice, which awarded $150,885 in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants (Recovery and non-Recovery funds) to purchase law enforcement technology for the San Marcos Police Department and the Hays County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Developed grant proposals to The Meadows Foundation and the Emmett and Miriam McCoy Foundation which awarded a total of $715,000 toward the purchase and conservation of the 251-acre Sink Creek Tract, located in the Edward’s Aquifer recharge zone and San Marcos Springs watershed.

 

Austin Steam Train Association, Cedar Park, Texas (2009-11)

 

Researched and compiled a foundation grant strategy to support restorations to their historic 1916 steam locomotive, Southern Pacific Engine No. 786. Created a proposal template that is being customized to meet the guidelines of all prospects identified in the grant strategy. To date, grants totaling $37,500 have been awarded by the Burdine Johnson Foundation, The Brown Foundation and Union Pacific Foundation.

 

Vaughn House, Inc., Austin, Texas (2004-11)

 

Develop and implement annual grant strategies which have raised $173,536  to date for vocational and habilitation programs and capital improvements benefiting adults who are deaf and have a mental disability from the Austin Community Foundation, The George and Fay Young Foundation, RGK Foundation, The Moody Foundation, Ed Rachal Foundation, Donald D. Hammill Foundation, St. David’s Episcopal Church, Lola Wright Foundation, Theodore P. Davis Charitable Trust, St. David’s Medical Center Auxiliary, CitiFinancial, Texas Industries for the Blind and Handicapped, LCRA, and Wells Fargo Bank.

 

Library Foundation of Lampasas, Texas (2011)

 

Researching and compiling a foundation grant strategy to provide matching funds to support expansion of the public library, which serve Lampasas and surrounding communities.

 

City of Flatonia, Texas (2009)

 

Researched and compiled a combined Funding Resource Guide of private foundations and government grant sources to support historic preservation and restoration projects being carried out by the Flatonia Rail Park, the E.A. Arnim Archives and Museum, and the Flatonia Landmark Preservation Society. The guide included three separate grant strategies for each organization as well as a comparison table showing common funding prospects to underline the importance of a coordinated approach.

 

Hall-Rialto Preservation Association, Beeville, Texas (2007-09; 2011)

 

Researched foundation prospects, crafted a grant strategy and developed a proposal template requesting funds to complete the organization’s capital campaign to purchase, renovate and operate the historic 1922 Rialto Theater in Beeville as a multipurpose performing arts facility for rural South Texas. Facilitated a work session to develop a 3-year operating plan with projected income and expenses and program performance measures and evaluation methods. Proposals have generated $150,000 from The Meadows Foundation, $100,000 from The Brown Foundation, $150,000 from the Beeville Economic Improvement Corporation, $5,000 from the Texas Historical Foundation and $2,000 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

 

Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, La Grange, Texas (2007-09)

 

Researched and compiled a grant strategy and funding guide to support the Texas Czech Library and Museum capital campaign in La Grange. Developed grant proposals that generated a $100,000 grant from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation and a $16,000 grant from the LCRA Community Development Partnership Program.

 

Northside Center, Inc., El Campo, Texas (2008-09)

 

Researched and compiled a Funding Resource Guide and grant strategy and developed grant proposal templates to support their campaign to renovate and expand Northside Education Center, a distance learning facility in El Campo that serves rural Wharton, Fort Bend, Matagorda, Colorado and Brazoria counties. Wrote a $200,000 application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program and a $518,202 application to the Economic Development Administration Public Works & Economic Development Program to create the Gulf Coast Vocational and Workforce Training Center at Northside. Wrote a foundation proposal template that was used to generate an $80,000 grant from The Meadows Foundation.

 

Wimberley Valley Watershed Association, Wimberley, Texas (2008-09)

 

Researched and compiled a Funding Resource Guide and grant strategy to support land acquisition, development and programming at Jacob’s Well Natural Area.

 

Hays County, San Marcos, Texas (1994-2008)

 

Provided proposal writing and consulting services that helped the Hays County Grants Department raise a total of $1.7 million in federal/state government and local foundation grants to support county programs and projects in the areas of criminal justice, public health, recycling, and parks and open space.

 

Researched and developed the Hays County Parks and Open Space Funding Guide, which includes a matrix and supporting documentation detailing available sources of federal, state, foundation and corporate funding, as well as surplus property, other types of assistance, and grant writing training.

 

Assisted in the implementation of the Hays County Parks and Open Space Master Plan by developing PowerPoint presentations pitching funding for parks projects to the Hays County Commissioner’s Court.

  

Friends of the Depot - Giddings, Texas (2007-08)

 

Researched prospects and developed a grant strategy and proposal templates to complete a $2.3 million project to restore and re-open three historic railroad depots in Giddings as the Union Station Transportation Museum and Visitor’s Center. Grants totaling $55,500 were received from The Brown Foundation, the Burdine Johnson Foundation, Texas Historical Foundation, the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, Union Pacific Foundation, National Trust for Historic Preservation and The Trull Foundation.

 

Family Eldercare, Austin, Texas (1994–2007)

 

Developed and implemented annual grant strategies that raised a total of $4.6 million in foundation, corporate and government grants for programs and special initiatives over 13 years. Some highlights include:

 

Secured $700,000 in grants from the Roy F. & Joann Cole Mitte Foundation, Isla Carroll Turner Friendship Trust, St. David’s Foundation, Lola Wright Foundation and the Tocker Foundation toward their current capital campaign to build a new facility at the former Mueller airport site.

 

Secured $617,000 in foundation grants from The Meadows Foundation, The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, and the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation to support construction of Lyons Gardens Senior Community, a model affordable supported senior housing development in East Austin.

 

McKenna Healthcare Foundation, New Braunfels, Texas (2005)

 

Developed and implemented a six-month grant strategy that raised $250,000 from AT&T Foundation and $100,000 from The Meadows Foundation to help build and equip the McKenna HealthLink and Children’s Museum, an innovative cultural and health education facility serving rural south central Texas.

 

Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Austin, Texas (2003)

 

Provided consultation and developed a proposal to Houston Endowment which awarded $173,000 to pilot a program to train and certify Community Health Workers to increase eligible, uninsured children\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s access to primary and preventive health care through Children\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Health Insurance Program and Medicaid. Houston Endowment funds drew down a federal match of $430,000, bringing the total funds raised to $603,000.

 

CEN-TEX Certified Development Corporation, Austin, Texas (2002)

 

Provided research, planning consultation and proposal writing services to develop a work plan and grant request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which awarded $680,000 through their Intermediary Relending Program to establish a revolving loan fund to provide low-interest loans to women- and minority-owned small businesses and nonprofits in distressed rural Central and South Texas communities.

 

Odeon Preservation Association, Inc., Mason, Texas (1996-99)

 

Developed and carried out a grant strategy that raised $150,000 from The Meadows Foundation, The Brown Foundation, Abell-Hanger Foundation, the LCRA Community Development Partnership Program, The Trull Foundation and the Dodge Jones Foundation to purchase and restore the 1928 Odeon Theater in downtown Mason as a movie house, performing arts and community center for rural West-Central Texas.

 

Scheib Opportunity Center, San Marcos, Texas (1998)

 

Developed a proposal to The Meadows Foundation, which raised $50,000 to expand the Center\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s facility to meet the growing need for mental health and mental retardation services in Hays and Blanco counties.

 

San Marcos River Foundation, San Marcos, Texas (1996-97)

 

Provided prospect research, program development consultation and grant writing services, which raised $10,000 over two years from the Rachael and Ben Vaughan Foundation to purchase hydrolab water quality monitoring equipment and to establish the San Marcos River Legal Defense Fund, and $1,000 from the Lola Wright Foundation to purchase computer equipment.

 

Wimberley Senior Citizens Activities/Wimberley Institute of Cultures, Wimberley, Texas (1996)

 

Wrote a grant proposal to the Houston Endowment, which raised $25,000 to support the purchase, preservation and renovation of the historic Winters-Wimberley House for use as a historical center.

 

Willie Mae Mitchell Community Opportunity Center, San Marcos, Texas (1994 and 1998-99)

 

Provided planning consultation and developed grant proposals which raised $92,130 from The Meadows Foundation in 1994 to help restore the historic Old Dunbar School in San Marcos as the Willie Mae Mitchell Community Opportunity Center and $75,000 in 1998 for program support. Developed a proposal to the RGK Foundation, which awarded $15,000 in 1999 to initiate the New PATHS to Technology Program.

26th National Institute on Human Services in Rural Areas: Convened and moderated a panel discussion on Developing a Rural Nonprofit Management Assistance Network to Promote Community and Economic Development at the University of Texas at Austin-School of Social Work in 2001. Panelists included eight representatives from the rural economic development, community networking, nonprofit management assistance, academic, and foundation sectors statewide.
