117 W. Grant Street, # 326 Minneapolis, MN 55403 22 November 2006 Human Resources Minneapolis, MN Dear Sir/Madam: I would very much like to be a part of your team by helping to keep your library, file room, or records department running smoothly, so that your staff, and patrons, can obtain the information that they need. Some of the services that I would like to offer your firm are these: -Loose-leaf update filing, including pocket parts, and the claiming of missing pages; -Shelving of all materials, including clearing of all tables, and trucks; -Maintenance of all serials records; -Interlibrary loan, including any leg work; -Sorting, filing, and retrieval of medical, personnel, or other records. In the years since earning my Bachelor’s degree in library science, I have served in a variety of libraries, as well as offices, public, as well as corporate, and academic. My duties have encompassed many capacities from records and loose-leaf update filing to materials preparation, and from all circulation desk duties to light reference. My years of temporary work have taught me to be a bit of a chameleon, as well as a team player. I learn new ways, and can shift gears, quickly, and easily, in order to meet the client’s changing needs. I will gladly pitch in wherever my talents, and skills, are needed, and welcome the opportunity to learn new ones. One of the major temporary assignments that I have completed while in the Twin Cities spanned a year and a half at Abbot Northwestern Hospital as an employee of Kelly Services. My duties included the sorting and filing of medical records, the pulling of requests, logging them out to the requesting station, and sending them, as well as logging them back in, and re-filing them upon their return. I also completed a similar assignment of several months, also through Kelly Services, in the patient records department of the Outpatient Clinic at the University of Minnesota. While I have checked in serials at many of the libraries at which I have served, at McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland, that was one of my primary jobs. The part of that work that I really enjoyed was being assigned to what I affectionately called “The U. F. O. Truck”. If a Serials Clerk was unable to identify any given piece after a reasonable search, that piece was placed on this truck for a more extensive search. While I never actually kept records on my batting average, I know that it was well over 75%. There were very few pieces that I had to take to my supervisor. The other portion of my duties at McKeldin included unpacking shipments, and logging the arrival of the contents on the computer prior to sending them to be catalogued, and prepared for the shelves. This work often entailed ironing out snags if there were some inconsistency in a given piece of material, or record. Again, there were very few pieces that I had to pass along to my supervisor. Several times in my career, I have also served in a number of concurrent, part-time positions. To me, this is just like school. I didn’t study Shakespeare in Algebra class, and that is exactly how I work. When I am on your time, I am on your time, and when I am on someone else’s time, I am on their time. With the hope that I may be of service to your firm, its staff, and its patrons, on a full-time or a part-time basis, I look forward to the opportunity of discussing a position with you at your earliest convenience.
