Cascade Asset Management, LLC - Managing By Example


Cascade Asset Management, LLC, an IT asset retirement and management company is a unique and forward-thinking company not only in what they do, but how they do it.  Husband and wife owners, Neil and Jessica Peters-Michaud lead by example, setting goals for the number of women on the staff.  A core value of the company, women inclusion does not come from government regulation but from an understanding of the value females bring to the company and the desire for a more diverse workforce.

Dawn Collins, HR Coordinator for Cascade has been charged with hiring more women for the Cascade salesforce as well as for the warehouse and technology side of the business, positions traditionally dominated by males.  “Inclusion within our organization is directed by both owners and something we have been doing for a long time.  Female employees are common among the office and customer service staff, but not in other areas of our business” says Collins.

An initiative was made last year, by the owners of Cascade, to hire more women.  Dawn Collins says this has been easier said than done.  In an industry that attracts more males than females, it is especially challenging to find qualified female employees.  “We have difficulty finding females to apply for the warehouse or technology jobs.  We look to local colleges and tech colleges for applicants and promote from within as often as possible, but had been unable to meet our goal.”  Ms. Collins turned to WomensJobList to find women to fill open positions.  “WomensJobList was able to reach a much broader pool of applicants and helped us fill a position we were unable to fill before.”

Once hired, Cascade mentors new employees from the start and actively works to promote from within the organization.  Because of the difficulty in the past of finding female applicants, Cascade plans to do on the job training to bring more females into the technology side of the business.  Cascade has also developed Respectful Workplace Training which they conduct once per year with employees to make sure the organization maintains a culture of inclusion.
