Recruiting Statistics

According to a June report by the Society for Human Resources (SHRM), some human resources and recruiting professionals are reporting that it is becoming harder to recruit for key positions in manufacturing and service sectors.

This information might come as a shock, considering there is still 9.1% unemployment. However a net of 14.1% of HR professionals had more difficulty recruiting for the manufacturing sector in May 2011 than in May 2010--an increase of 8.6 points. For the service sector, a net of 8.0% of HR professionals found recruiting in May 2011 tougher than the same time last year, an increase of 13.1 points.

Even though nearly 14 million people are unemployed in the U.S., human resource professionals are reporting having trouble finding qualified candidates in two of the sectors hit hardest by the recession. One possible factor for this is that many of these open positions are newly-created, high-level jobs that require advanced skills. Where there is demand, over time, the labor pool tends to shift. We can only hope that these statistics are a leading indicator and that the labor pool begins to sharpen and advance their skills.
