Diversity Implementation Strategies

Promoting diversity remains a common goal among many companies. Recently the Federal Government set up the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion throughout its regulatory agencies. The goal of the OMWI is to insure that financial services firms develop a strategy to insure the "fair" inclusion of women and minorities in their work force. A report by the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion on how financial services companies should go about insuring "fair" inclusion of women and minorities in their work force is due in front of congress in July 2011.

The report, Winning Through Diversity: Lessons from Intercollegiate Athletics and Creating Community from Difference, provides some interesting tactics on implementing a diversity strategy. The study found that college athletes responded particularly well to diversity challenges when the athletes were given a common goal and a sense of community began to develop. Introducing a meritocratic structure among this community was also a key element."The meritocratic nature of sports plays a big role," Dr. Lisa E. Wolf-Wendel says. "The diversity occurs because the coach doesn't say, "I need an African American on the team.' They say, `I need a good player,'" Dr. Lisa E. Wolf-Wendel says.

Having an interest in pursuing a common goal, creating a sense of community and implementing a meritocratic structure enabled the athletes to thrive in a diverse environment. Implementing such a plan could be a great tool to grow and enhance your companies diversity efforts.
