Women in the workforce "A Blueprint for Change"

With more and more emphasis being put on diversity and inclusion, the Wall Street Journal  recently held a conference and put together a detailed report entitled “A Blueprint for Change”. Business and government leaders gathered and examined what’s holding women back in the workplace, and set out an action plan for creating new opportunities.

Hundreds of women professionals weighed in to give their recommendations, including some of the top women in business; Sallie Krawcheck, President of global wealth and investment management Bank of America, Debra L. Lee, Chairman and CEO, BET Networks, and Julie Beck, CFO Joy Mining Machinery. Some of their suggestions include:

1. P&L Leadership: Companies should establish a program to train and encourage women to take leadership positions that involve profit and loss experience.

2. Women on Boards: Get more women on the boards of companies by having the SEC require listed companies to set and disclose their own goals for adding women to their boards.

3. Promote Women on Potential: Women should be equally considered for promotion based on their potential, as are men.

4. Media: The media needs to work harder to dispel stereotypes about women in business.

5. Importance of Self-Promotion: Women need to get comfortable with self-advocacy.

6. Mentors and Sponsors: Develop more industry-wide and company-specific programs for both mentorship and sponsorship.

7.  Strong Management Programs: Recruit outside normal channels and leverage diverse networks.
