DECRIPTION
 
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to perform a variety of unskilled duties in the areas of: vehicle service and maintenance; solid waste collection, parks, grounds, building, sewer, water, street maintenance and related areas; run errands; minor scheduling; and to perform related work as required.

 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this entry-level maintenance class are usually assigned to operating divisions or locations to perform unskilled work in support of trade, technical, professional or administrative staff. Positions could be assigned to any department or area including: City Hall, Fire, Police, Solid Waste, Streets, Waste Water, Water, Parks, and Building Maintenance. No one position would normally perform all of the duties listed below; however, any position may perform any of the duties typical of this class on a limited basis. Positions in this class perform work in accordance with established instructions. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Work is reviewed periodically upon completion and while in progress. Incumbents are expected to refer most variations in work to their supervisor for instructions.

 
Examples of Duties
 
Under supervision delivers equipment, supplies, and mail; performs hydrant painting and maintenance; fills air bottles; operates City vehicles; assists in the collection of residential and commercial refuse, assists in the maintenance and repair of public parks, streets, sewers, water systems and facilities; performs a wide variety of unskilled duties; loads and unloads supplies, lifting and moving heavy objects, assists in maintenance and repair of public works facilities, digs trenches, uses air tools, performs other manual labor necessary to the completion of jobs; cleans up yards, alleys, and buildings; cleans and maintains tools used on the job; lubricates equipment to keep equipment in good working condition; cleans and maintains grounds; may operate light equipment; assists in repairs of walks and cement structures; works as a helper, performing the more routine unskilled carpentry, painting, and minor work on buildings; assists with planting, watering, cultivating, fertilizing and caring for shrubbery, lawns and trees; mows and edges lawns; assists in spraying for pests and weed control; rakes grounds; prepares soil for planting and transplanting; polices parks and cleans restrooms; clean and performs minor repairs on refuse bins; cleans lift stations; replaces broken light bulbs; keeps simple labor records; inspects and performs routine services on diesel and gasoline-powered equipment; lubricates automobiles, trucks and other motorized equipment; operates motorized equipment in connection with repair and servicing; changes and repairs tires; cleans, washes and polishes motor equipment; under supervision makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and may assist on major repairs; obtains equipment parts; steam cleans refuse trucks; fuels refuse vehicles; performs minor body and fender work; cleans and maintains work areas, hand tools and equipment; and sweeps floors, picks up litter and keeps work area and property free of debris and performs related work as required.
 
Typical Qualifications
 
LICENSE REQUIRED
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record.
 
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Education:
• High School diploma or equivalent.
 
Experience:
• None required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Basic math;
• Simple record keeping;
• Personal computer operation;
• Basic office and clerical practices;
• Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in maintenance work;
• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to:
• Read and write at the level required for successful job performance (SOPs, MSDS);
• Use and properly maintain assigned tools and equipment;
• Perform semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction work;
• Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
• Maintain simple records;
• Sort and file accurately and locate materials in files;
• Maintain accurate records;
• Operate standard office equipment;
• Read, understand and apply written materials;
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with persons contacted in the course of work.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
• Strength: Heavy work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 100 pounds with frequent lifting
   and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 60 pounds;
• Incumbents may be required to work in trenches or other semi-enclosed spaces and
   often work in conditions of dust and pollen.

Applicants must meet each qualification for the position by the deadline date. All applications will be reviewed based on the necessary employment standards for the position. Those candidates who best meet the needs of the operations may be invited to participate in a written examination that will be weighted 100%. Candidates must earn a score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligibility list. Applicants receiving a passing score may be placed on an eligibility list for a period of up to one (1) year. Examinations and department interviews for the position will be administered in the City of Clovis. As determined by the City and at the City's expense, successful candidates shall be required to complete and pass a medical examination, a drug/alcohol screen, and a background investigation. Possession of a valid California driver's license and good driving record will be required prior to hire.  Proof of citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.

EXAMINATION SCHEDULE
