Job Summary
The School of Nursing- Retention Specialist (Nursing Learning Specialist) is responsible for overseeing retention efforts for students, focusing specifically on academic success and support, through coordinating academic enrichment programming to undergraduate nursing students in the professional major. This is done through targeted outreach for at-risk students, academic support services, assessment, referral, and follow-up. The retention specialist is an integral part of the Student Affairs Team and serves as a resource to faculty, staff, and students.

Some of the duties the Nursing Learning Specialist include but are not limited to the following:

  • Meet with students individually and in small groups to provide assistance and guidance on content for all Health and Illness, Pathophysiology/Pharmacology and other nursing courses as necessary
  • Facilitate one-on-one and small group academic skills coaching and workshops for students who are struggling academically, who have been placed on academic probation, or are looking to improve their academic performance
  • Monitor, plans and and facilitates services and program offerings working closely with Academic Success Coordinator and Instructors
  • Conduct targeted outreach campaigns to at-risk students working closely with Academic Success Coordinator and Academic Advisors to identify students early
  • Facilitate workshops on applying the clinical judgment model to studying and learning, answering NCLEX (National Council Licensure Exam) style questions, how to study for nursing courses and other topics as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or higher level nursing degree (BSN, MSN, etc.)
  • Prior experience working with students

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Nursing
  • Current license as RN
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience working with high school or college students on academic skills
  • Experience creating and facilitating presentations
