The Associate Engineer will be responsible for using engineering judgment to design new and rehabilitate existing conveyance, distribution, and treatment facilities. Including pipelines, underground shafts and tunnels, hydraulic structures, pumping plants, water treatment plants, and hydro-electric power plants, with an emphasis on civil design.

The General Design Team supports the civil engineering of capital improvement programs and operations & maintenance projects. As the Associate Engineer, you will design and prepare plans, profiles, sections and details for large and small diameter pipelines, open channels, paving, grading and drainage, signing and striping, and excavation plans. You will perform alignment studies; prepare site plans; preliminary design reports; conduct utility research and relocations; assist in the design of traffic control plans; reviewing survey data; developing specifications and selecting construction materials; reviewing construction submittals; and other assignments as required. Some CAD drafting, pipeline inspection and fieldwork will be required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Assistant Engineer II level; OR a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years of relevant experience which must have been at the Assistant Engineer II level.

A degree (Bachelors or Masters) in a related field is defined as a Civil Engineering Degree.

Relevant Experience is defined as: A combination of civil engineering experience in the following areas:

  • Develop design documents (i.e. study reports, design reports, plan and profile drawings, detail drawings, and specifications) for alignments of water pipelines, storm drains, sewer piping, electrical duct banks, and miscellaneous yard piping.
  • Develop street improvement plans; grading plans for industrial facilities; drawings detailing the control of surface flow of storm water, and erosion protection near existing facilities and roads.
  • Develop utility relocation drawings and traffic control and stripping plans.
  • Obtain permits from cities such as encroachment permits, excavation permits, traffic control permits and work related to applying for and obtaining MS4 permits.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations:

Certificate(s): Engineer in Training (EIT)

License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
