An Associate Engineer acts with full competence and uses judgement in interpreting and adapting guiding principles such as; policies, practices, procedures, standards, regulations, precedents and work directions for application to resolve specific operational or project engineering issues or problems. You will prepare or may lead other engineering staff in the development of engineering design criteria, calculations, plans, specifications, estimates and reports for a variety of projects associated with water conveyance, distribution, storage and treatment systems. As an Associate Engineer, you may be responsible for the mechanical equipment design including, process design, sizing and specification of valves, water treatment and filtration equipment, chemical injection equipment and solid handling equipment; supporting factory and field acceptance testing, system commissioning and system start-up in support of construction projects and ongoing operations; investigating and inspecting existing facilities, structures, and equipment to resolve performance, operation or reliability issues.

The Design Section provides critical engineering services for the Metropolitan Water District. The Treatment Plant Design Team supports ongoing operating and capital project development of both new facilities and facility refurbishment at Metropolitan. Facilities include: conventional water treatment plants, ozone generation and injections facilities, water treatment auxiliary systems, advanced water treatment facilities, chemical injections facilities, and solids handling facilities. The team designs facilities & equipment associated with water treatment plant including: chemical feed pumps and storage tanks, settling basins, contactors, flocculators, solids separation equipment, filter presses, water treatment auxiliary systems, pumps, control and isolation valves, actuators, and provides environmental health & safety analyses.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Assistant Engineer II level; or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years of relevant experience which must have been at the Assistant Engineer II level.

A degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in related field is defined as a Civil, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degree.

Relevant Experience is defined as: Leading a design team in a project team environment to develop construction drawings and equipment specifications for facilities that convey, store or treat liquids or solids. Working knowledge of all types of pumps, valves (isolation, control and regulating) and actuators (electric and hydraulic), water treatment auxiliary systems, HVAC, plumbing, and hydraulic turbines.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Certificate(s): Engineer in Training (EIT) in Civil, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
