As an Assistant Engineer II you will assist other engineering staff in the development of engineering design criteria, calculations, plans, specifications, estimates and reports for a variety of projects associated with water conveyance, distribution, storage and treatment systems. You may be responsible for the mechanical equipment design including, process design, sizing and specification of large rotating equipment, valves, and water treatment and filtration equipment; supporting factory and field acceptance testing, system commissioning and system start-up in support of construction projects and ongoing operations; investigating, inspecting, and making recommendations to support the return to service of existing facilities, structures, and equipment to resolve performance, operation or reliability issues.

The Design Section provides critical engineering services for the Metropolitan Water District. The Equipment Design Team supports ongoing operating and capital project development of both new facilities and facility refurbishment at Metropolitan. Facilities include: pumping plants, pressure control facilities, conveyance and storage infrastructure, hydroelectric facilities, conventional water treatment plants, and advanced water treatment facilities. Equipment includes: large pumps up to 12,500 hp, isolation valves up to 144” diameter, hydraulic turbine generators up to 24 MW, control valves (globe, plunger, multi-orifice and sleeve), relief valves, slide gates and radial (tainter) gates, conventional and advanced water treatment equipment, solids separation equipment (filters, strainers and hydro clones), facility emergency power generation equipment, and more.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years of relevant experience, which must have been at the Assistant Engineer I level.

A degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in related field is defined as a Mechanical Engineering degree.

Relevant Experience is defined as: Assisting a design team in a project team environment to develop construction drawings and equipment specifications for facilities that convey, store or treat liquids or solids. Assisting with or developing the specifications for the acquisition of mechanical equipment and systems. Experience with pumps, valves (isolation, control and regulating) and actuators (electric and hydraulic), water treatment auxiliary systems, HVAC, plumbing, or hydraulic turbines.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
