Metropolitan owns and operates: Five water treatment plants, the largest of which can deliver up to 750 million gallons of water per day; the Colorado River Aqueduct, a 242-mile conveyance system designated as a national historic engineering landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, which can convey up to 1.7 billion gallons of water per day from Lake Havasu to Southern California; 800 miles of pipelines, ranging up to nearly 20 feet in diameter; and numerous pumping plants (the largest of which has nine 12,500 hp pumps), hydroelectric generating stations, and support facilities.

Assistant Engineer I (Construction Management Unit, Job #5391874) - 2 positions (Note: these two (2) openings are located at Metropolitan's La Verne office)

Metropolitan Engineers can expect to work on some of the largest water treatment, conveyance, and distribution projects in the world. We deliver an average of 1.5 billion gallons of water per day to a 5,200-square mile service area in Southern California.

Engineering staff plan, design, and manage construction of new facilities and modification of existing facilities to ensure delivery of high quality water to approximately 19 million people in Southern California.

Each Assistant Engineer I candidate hired through this recruitment will work with engineers, project managers, construction managers, water system operations staff, and technical specialists under direct supervision in an exciting, challenging environment with broad opportunities for career advancement.

JOB SUMMARY - Assistant Engineer I (2 positions - Construction Management Unit, job #5391874)

In the Construction Management Unit, the Assistant Engineers hired for these positions are responsible for learning and assisting with contract administration, materials testing, and field inspection duties on heavy public works construction contracts. The successful candidates will learn and assist in assuring that constructed work and furnished materials meet specified standards. These positions involve learning and assisting in coordination with Metropolitan's design engineers, operations personnel, other agencies, etc.

JOB DUTIES
GENERAL
1. Learns and assists with planning, coordinating, conducting and monitoring tests, studies, investigations.
2. Learns and assists to prepare technical documents, reports, and presentations.
3. Learns and assists with technical analyses.
4. Learns and assists to prepare cost estimates and budgets.
5. May execute mathematical, statistical, and other models.
6. Learns and assists with site inspections.
7. Learns and assists with maintaining official records, documents, and data.
8. May participate on a project team.
9. Performs other related Engineer job duties as required

INSPECTION
1. Learns and assists to inspect and verify contractor's work is in compliance with contract requirements.
2. Learns and assists in reviewing submittals, Requests For Information, preparing responses, and drafting Field Memorandums.
3. Learns and assists with reviewing contractor plans, procedures, schedules, and preparing independent cost estimates.
4. Learns and assists with factory acceptance testing, systems start-up, and coordinating warranty work.
5. Learns and assists with performing forensic investigations of construction deficiencies.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hour days

JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field by June 30, 2017. A related field is defined as: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Construction Management.
Should you receive a job offer with the Metropolitan Water District, it will be contingent upon successful completion of an engineering degree on or before June 30, 2017 in the discipline you have indicated in your application. You must provide proof of a Bachelor's degree.
General Required Knowledge of: Engineering principles and practices in specific discipline; and current office technology and equipment.
General Required Skills and Abilities to: Analyze and interpret data; organize; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.
License
Valid California Class C Driver License or equivalent that allows you to drive in the course of your employment is required at time of application.
