Back in 1979 the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracking salary information for women. At the time women earned just 62 percent of what men did. In 2011, the Bureau of Labor of Statistics reported that women now earn on average 81.6 cents for every dollar men do. There is no question that this figure will begin to tighten.

Women now make up almost half the workforce and are graduating from college at a higher rate then men. The factors that may slow the tightening wage gab are the fact that women are more likely to work part time and are less likely to negotiate their salaries. The other major factor is the fact that women are more likely to choose a career they find more fulfilling and interesting over work that is more lucrative.
