Job Summary
The School of Nursing Retention Specialist (General Learning Specialist) is responsible for overseeing retention efforts for students, focusing specifically on academic success and support, through coordinating academic enrichment programming to all undergraduate nursing students. This is done through targeted outreach for at-risk students, academic support services, assessment, referral, and follow-up. The retention specialist is an integral part of the Student Affairs Team and serves as a resource to faculty, staff, and students.

Some of the duties the General Learning Specialist include but are not limited to the following:

  • Meet with students individually and in small groups to provide assistance and guidance on various academic skills topics including: the study cycle, metacognitive learning strategies, time management, study plans and other topics as necessary (with a focus on students struggling academically)
  • Monitor, plans and and facilitates services and program offerings working closely with Academic Success Coordinator and Instructors
  • Conduct targeted outreach campaigns to at-risk students working closely with Academic Success Coordinator and Academic Advisors to identify students early
  • Facilitate workshops on active reading strategies, notetaking, exam preparation, test-taking language, test anxiety and other topics as necessary
  • Facilitate one-on-one and small group academic skills coaching and workshops for students who are struggling academically, who have been placed on academic probation, or are looking to improve their academic performance



Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Prior experience working with students



Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or other directly related field
  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience working with high school or college students on academic skills
  • Experience creating and facilitating presentations
