The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a consortium of twenty six cities and water districts that provides drinking water to nearly 19 million people in Southern California. Metropolitan's facilities include the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct; five conventional water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 2.6 billion gallons per day; nine surface water reservoirs; 800 miles of pipeline, ranging up to nearly 20 feet in diameter; 16 hydroelectric power plants; and numerous support facilities.
LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST I

The Water Systems Operations Group, Water Quality Section has one (1) opening for a Laboratory Technologist I within the Microbiology Unit.

This position provides laboratory support to Metropolitanís Quagga Mussel Control Program, including much of the quality assurance and quality control that is required to ensure the accuracy and integrity of monitoring results. The position also conducts routine laboratory work to support source water monitoring, pathogen detection, and other microbiological investigations.

This position is responsible for the following: receive and preserve quagga mussel veliger samples within SOP-mandated time frames; prepare reagents; clean and decontaminate glassware and equipment; ensure supplies and equipment are available to complete analyses in a timely manner; perform routine quality assurance and quality control tasks and complete required documentation; schedule essential maintenance for analytical equipment; clean laboratory surfaces; and stock laboratories with routine supplies.

JOB DUTIES
1. Performs and assists with chemical, physical, and microbiological tests for monitoring of water quality; prepares reagents and standards.

2. Learns and assists to operate and maintain laboratory equipment; may clean and maintain laboratory glassware and work areas.

3. Learns and assists to decontaminate and dispose of chemical or biological waste.

4. Updates quality assurance and quality control records and standard operating procedures.

5. May collect water samples, including special and or emergency requests.

6. May prepare purchase requests for laboratory supplies.

7. Provides training on laboratory procedures and related equipment.

8. Performs other related Laboratory Technologist job duties as required.

Work Schedule: 9/80; Monday ñ Friday (alternate Fridays off)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school diploma or a High School Equivalency certificate, two years of relevant experience, and completion of 24 semester units from an accredited college or university.

Relevant experience is defined as two years of work as a laboratory technician in a microbiology, biotechnology, or biochemistry laboratory; environmental microbiology or environmental science projects; various types of microscopy, including sample preparation; preparing microbiological and cell culture media; preparing standard laboratory reagents; identifying invasive mussels or other aquatic organisms; preparing and adhering to standard operating procedures; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Required Knowledge of: Chemistry or Microbiology; Good Laboratory Practices; laboratory safety; algebraic math; Laboratory Information Management System; and current office technology and equipment.

Required Skills and Abilities to: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; learn new analytical techniques; use algebraic math; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.
