Duties

As an Administrative Assistant for the Office of Security Operations (OSO), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), major duties include: Payroll and timekeeping duties:

  • Answering requests from and providing advice to employees, supervisors, timekeepers, financial management specialists, and human resource specialists on rules, regulations, and procedures relating to pay.
  • Training staff to enter time-card data and assisting timekeepers with difficult time and attendance issues.
  • Certifying time-cards and corrections each pay period and conducting random audits.
  • Acting as the point-of-contact for TSA\'s HR Access service provider to assist in resolving employee payroll issues.
Administrative duties:
  • Word processing of documents, letters, memos and reports.
  • Collecting and organizing materials from several sources to support work projects.
  • Maintaining directories, lists, and other standard guides.
  • Compiling documents for routing and approval.
  • Scheduling meetings.
  • Interacting with internal staff, typically in more than one organizational unit, to share information or discuss status of tasks/assignments.
  • Interacting with internal staff and external customers to exchange information or discuss status of routine issues or schedules; May have contact with customers and other parties on routine matters such as greeting and referring callers and visitors.

Qualifications

To qualify for the SV-D Pay Band (equivalent to GS-5/6), you must meet one of the qualification requirements (A, B, OR C) outlined below.

A. Experience: For those qualifying using experience, you must have one year of specialized experience at the SV-C or GS-4 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. Such experience will include filing and maintaining simple office records; using common office equipment such as personal computers and copy or fax machines; and performing reception duties such as answering phone calls, greeting visitors, and taking messages;

OR

B. Education: Completion of four years of education above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university;

OR

C. Combining of Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements, and may be computed by first determining the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the position; then determining the education as a percentage of the education required for the position; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for the position.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
