  1. Purpose of Position

 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will provide and ensure technical excellence and practicality as a professional individual and team contributor supporting and applying mechanical engineering analysis, concept design and detailed mechanical design for new, existing and legacy Gleason Metrology Systems’ (GMS) products.

 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will consistently work to and produce high standards in his/her work applying sound engineering and business practices focused on the continual improvement of quality, accuracy in design and the advancement of technology while working with clear determination to increase and enhance overall customer satisfaction within all that is contributed.

 

Position requires 5-10% travel to meet suppliers and customers, attend conferences/ trade shows, and to resolve problems onsite.

 

 

  1. Key Responsibilities

 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be relied upon to develop, support and drive all aspects of Mechanical Engineering associated with GMS’s high-precision CNC Gear Metrology Systems and other related products.

 

 

  • Directly responsible for the mechanical engineering design and analysis of new GMS products as well as re-engineering and maintenance of current and legacy products.
  • Directly contribute to the mechanical engineering design analysis of custom gear metrology systems design and provide the mechanical engineering leadership on various customer specific machine design projects and system solutions
  • Ensure that all GMS products meet all American and International standards requirements such as CE/ISO etc.
  • Provide the enhanced analytical skill capability and expertise when supporting engineering team members in the design and development of semi-automated and fully automated gear inspection systems – Solid Modeling, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Strength of Materials, Engineering/Mathematical Systems Analysis and Simulation Techniques
  • Ensure that all engineering work is performed within the principles of Value Engineering (VE), Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) while properly supporting and satisfying the Purchasing and Service

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible to develop and maintain highly professional and productive relationships across many disciplines both from a technical perspective and a business perspective – he/she will be accountable to accommodate and promote best practices across:

  1. Measures of Performance

 

Measures of Performance by which the Mechanical Design Engineer will be assessed encompass all Key Responsibilities outlined inclusive of the following performance indicators:

 

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage projects within time and budget constraints. (On Time Delivery – OTD)
  • Project planning and execution of the technical elements from an individual and team contribution driving innovation, cost effective designs, enhanced reliability, manufacturing and assembly efficiency (First Pass Yield and Warranty Costs).
  • Demonstrated ability to fully comprehend the scope of the customer requests for quotation (RFQs) and provide thorough estimates of material, labor costs and delivery times. (First Pass Yield)
  • Consistently ensures and supports that the highest accuracy is maintained on all engineering documentation, BOMs, CAD models, drawings, schematics, process flowcharts, ECOs, special build and test plans, part number creation/maintenance etc. using the business systems and processes (SAP/ERP). (Reduce Rework and Warranty Costs)

 

 

  1. Competence and Skill

 

While the primary emphasis is on mechanical engineering technical skills and experience, project management and interpersonal skills are very important for a successful candidate in this position. The minimum requirements for this position are outline below:

 

  • Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering Technology (BSMeT) from an accredited engineering program
  • 7-10 years’ experience in the design and manufacturing of precision equipment preferably within the machine tool and/or coordinate measuring machine (CMM) business sectors. Higher education and/or other relevant qualifications may be considered as a substitute for the experience.
  • Demonstrated and progressive ability to design and analyze micron to sub-micron accuracy machines and custom engineered devices
  • Specific background and design tenure covering the design methods and technology of machine tool spindles, linear motion systems, rotary tables, pick-and-place automation, robotic applications, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), man-machine ergonomics, vibration damping and isolation, laser mapping and linearization, and special machine enclosures.
  • Hands-on experience with solid modeling and finite element analysis of mechanical components, subsystems and complete systems. Specific experience with software packages such as Solid Edge and ANSYS are required.
  • Ability to analyze, determine root cause and come up with robust solutions to complex mechanical design problems.
  • Competence in producing detailed Engineered Drawings with appropriate Geometric & Dimensional Tolerances.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing process methods specific to flat grinding, OD/ID grinding, jig grinding, CNC milling, CNC turning, heat treating, stress relieving, welding technology, composites, casting and pattern design including various plating methods of hard chrome, electroless nickel, cadmium, chromate, anodizing, phosphating and passivating
  • Working knowledge of ISO14001and ISO9001
  • May consider a combination of education, training and relevant professional experience as substitute for BSME or BSMeT education requirement.
