As an entry-level microbiologist within this position you will perform routine microbiological procedures and microscopy with high precision and accuracy. You will utilize effective microbiological and aseptic techniques and learn to operate high performance microscopes while identifying target organisms. Occasional driving to District facilities to set up filtration apparatus and collect samples is required. You will be trained as an approved Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) laboratory analyst for Giardia and Cryptosporidium analysis under USEPA Method 1623.1.

You will also learn and assist with a variety of related duties including: culture media preparation and compliance bacteriological analysis under the Revised Total Coliform Rule; operating various instruments; culturing techniques; routine laboratory calculations; and basic statistics for data reports and quality assurance/quality control under ELAP requirements.

In order to be effective in this role you must: have taken college-level microbiology course(s); and be able to read, understand, and follow Standard Operating Procedures.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.

Related field is defined as: microbiology or a related biological, environmental or physical sciences field.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
License(s): Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
