This is a key business finance leadership role that is focused on business partnering, supporting and driving business performance.  This role is a critical member of the US  CMB and Americas GBM executive committees, providing finance stewardship, controllership, governance and oversight and contributing to the formation of business strategy.  Key roles and responsibilities include: 

  • Lead and build a high performance business finance function that can support the business efficiently and effectively
  • Drive business performance and support both business Executive Teams to make sound business decisions by providing insightful business performance analytics, highlighting risks and opportunities, and providing strong commercial finance support (e.g. pricing, ALCO, competitive analysis, client and product profitability, portfolio management)
  • Ensure effective allocation of resources (including balance sheet growth, strategic investment decisions and budget allocation) to optimize returns for the firm and shareholders;
  • Accountable executive for both GBM US and CMB US on CCAR Stress Testing activities.
  • Support business development activities related to acquisitions and divestitures
  • Be a change agent during times of significant business transformation
  • Drive continual process improvement mindset and lead on efforts to digitize activities across the teams

Impact on the Business

  • Ensure that the monthly financials for both businesses are produced in an accurate and timely manner in order to provide information to the management teams to aid business decision making.
  • Partner with Global CMB and GBM Finance teams to ensure the integrity of numbers and drive understanding of the key drivers of business performance through monthly analytics and preparation of high level commentary to facilitate EXCO and other key operating discussions (e.g. ALCO, RMM, Business Reviews, IR, etc.).
  • Lead role in strategic/operating plan processes including formulating/joined up growth strategies and plans and ensure business plans are consistent with the Group objectives and are completed in line with expectations and challenge countries where required by providing business and financial analytics inputs. 
  • Undertake ad hoc analysis of specific areas of the business as required and identification of issues and trends.
  • Development of and/or delivery of presentations on key financials/business issues as required.
  • Support regional business on an ongoing basis.  Work closely with business issues such as Liquidity, Funding, Risk Return Benchmarks, Stress testing and Portfolio Management etc.
  • Interact with various support functions/products to ensure a strong Finance voice. Work with countries to guide, support and share best practices.
  • Develop appropriate metrics to strengthen senior management oversight of business activities/costs.
Customers / Stakeholders
  • Provide full scale financial support and guidance to CEO CMB US and CEO GBM Americas and their respective management teams
  • Link in with key support areas such as regulatory / liquidity management / MI & Planning to enhance the quality of strategic management information;
  • Primary contact with Group Finance and Global Business Finance heads on matters relating to CMB and GBM performance.

  • Lead and develop an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices.  Cultivate an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand.
  • Lead the development of the business knowledge and business partnering and finance capabilities of the team. Continually assess and benchmark these capabilities to the best in class in the group and in the market

Operational Effectiveness & Control
  • Ensure maintenance of HSBC Internal Control Standards by ensuring compliance with FIM requirements and Group procedures.
  • Acting with integrity in an ethical manner.  Ensure performance and personal conduct is of a high professional manner.
  •  Ensure all business finance, accounting, operational and control procedures are understood and adhered to within the function
  • Manage the operational risk  within the function
  • Execute and mobilize review of current practice and implement initiatives for improved efficiency, effectiveness and control over business finance processes. 
Major Challenges
  • Leading the CMB and GBM businesses in driving financial performance whilst implementing the regulatory and compliance agenda
  • Optimizing resource allocation relative to various constraints the businesses and entity are operating within
Role Context

  • The Global CMB and Global GBM finance leadership teams
  • The regional finance leadership team for North America
  • The Executive Committees for both US CMB and Americas GBM

Management of Risk
  • Ensure employees apply compliance, operational risk controls in accordance with HSBC or regulatory standards and policies; and optimize relations with regulators by addressing any issues. 
  • The jobholder will continually reassess the operational risks associated with the finance function, role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology.
  • This will be achieved by ensuring all actions take account of the likelihood of operational risk occurring.  Also by addressing any areas of concern in conjunction with line management and/or the appropriate department.

Observation of Internal Controls
  • Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.
  • To implement the Group Compliance policy locally by managing compliance risk in liaison with the Head of Group Compliance, Regional Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer, ensuring adequate compliance resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimizing relations with regulators.
  • The jobholder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators.
  • The jobholder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply. 
  • This will be achieved by adhering to all relevant processes/procedures and by liaising with Compliance department about new business initiatives at the earliest opportunity. Also and when applicable, by ensuring adequate resources are in place and training is provided, fostering a compliance culture and optimizing relations with regulators.
Role Dimensions
  • CMB US covers US only, GBM Americas covers Canada, US, Mexico and South America
  • Combined revenues across both businesses are >$3bn
  • Combined RWAs across both businesses are C$65bn (PRA basis) c$100bn (US Std basis)

  • Owns the business strategic planning process (AOP), including target setting, financial projections / stress testing, AOP/ and forecasting.

Qualifications

 
  • In depth of knowledge of Groups activities and major Global Business
  • Good understanding of the financial services industry globally, key trends and market knowledge
  • Good financial modeling capability
  • Thorough and broad knowledge of commercial and international banking
  • Excellent working knowledge of IFRS and EV reporting
  • University degree and professional Accounting Qualification or equivalent with 10 years plus experience.
  • Good base knowledge of information technology with some experience of project management/business sponsorship.
  • High level verbal and written communication skills at all levels within the bank and with our customers.
  • Ability to build relationships and network at all levels. Needs to be adept and comfortable at working across and outside functional boundaries in an influential and leadership manner
  • Ability to highlight problems but more importantly offer solutions, and drive through their execution in a collective environment
  • Strong Management Information background both in terms of required content, production processes and understanding what drives the numbers reported
  •  Highly systems literate, with a good understanding of Excel and preferably TM1, and other relevant software packages
