Within the Water Quality Section at the Weymouth Water Treatment Plant, the Engineer will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and developing plans, policies, and strategies to ensure Metropolitan’s sources of water are protected from contamination threats. The position requires specialized knowledge and experience in source water protection, including work with federal, state, local, and other water and wastewater utilities, business, and non-governmental organizations to plan and implement water quality-related projects and efforts. This position also requires broad knowledge of water quality issues within the Western United States, California and locally that may affect Metropolitan’s source waters and conveyance treatment and distribution operations.

In this position you will manage and coordinate source water protection activities for the Colorado River, State Water Project, and Metropolitan’s local watersheds; monitor and participate in advisory forums on Colorado River water quality issues and remediation programs; prepare watershed sanitary surveys and watershed management/source water protection plans; participate in the development and enhancement of source water protection guidelines, monitoring programs, watershed/water quality modeling capabilities, and salinity management plans; review groundwater remediation projects subject to federal corrective action cleanup requirements (Resource Conservation & Recovery Act and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act); and prepare white papers, position papers, legislative reviews, detailed comment letters on environmental and regulatory documents.

Additionally, in this position you will coordinate with external agencies/organizations, conduct oral presentations, and represent Metropolitan in multi-stakeholder forums; administer and manage consultant contracts for projects pertaining to source water protection; and oversee engineering investigations and economic appraisals/evaluations of major or critical engineering projects.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and six years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level; or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level.


Relevant Experience is defined as engineering experience in the following areas: source water protection and/or water quality control; watershed management; water resource planning with understanding of applicable water quality regulations (California and Federal); groundwater remediation; and/or water treatment.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
License(s):

  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
  • Professional Engineer License (Civil) or (Chemical) from the state of California in good standing (required at time of application).
