The mission of New York Edge is to help bridge the opportunity gap among underserved students by providing programs designed to improve academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, character and attitudes for success in life.

We have Tutor/Counselors, Sports Specialist, Arts Specialist, Education Specialists in all our programs across the 5 boroughs.

Tutor/counselors are responsible for supervising and leading a group of students in the New York Edge programs while promoting the physical, intellectual, social, cultural and emotional well-being of said group. Tutor/counselors also participate in activities and trips while providing and maintaining a safe working environment. New York Edge tutor/counselors must embrace positive child and youth development principles and practices. These include building on youth strengths rather than focusing on youth deficits; setting and maintaining high expectations; understanding the centrality of and fostering positive relationships with peers and adults; providing age-appropriate and challenging programming; engaging participants as partners, not just as consumers of services; promoting positive identity formation and helping young people to fully develop their potential. New York Edge tutor/counselors respect and value the cultures and traditions of participants, their families and their communities, and treat all participants and staff equally, irrespective of race, religion, sex, gender identity, national origin, age or disability. New York Edge tutor/counselors must appreciate the range of abilities and diverse needs of children and youth in our programs. Our programs typically run from 2:30 – 6:00pm during the week and we often have opportunities throughout the 5 boroughs.

STEAM within our programs:
The school based STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) Activity Specialist is responsible for imparting instruction in one of the STEM disciplines to small groups of students. Most of the sites are in middle schools (grades 6-8); there are a few that are in the elementary schools.
Implement an approved STEAM curriculum.
Clearly display at the beginning of the lesson what the students will be able to do (the objective).
Clarify the underlying scientific, technological, engineering or mathematics principles embedded in the lesson.
Articulate with the school-based Site Director in a timely fashion regarding any materials or storage space needed
Maintain a careful inventory of the materials used at the conclusion of each lesson.
Document the effectiveness and success of the lessons in a report to the site director and the Education Department at the end of each of the three cycles. The use of multimedia e.g. cell phone photos is encouraged.
