ASSISTANT ENGINEER I
Water Quality

The Water Systems Operations Group, Water Quality Section, of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California currently has one (1) opening for an Assistant Engineer I within the Operations Compliance Team of the Water Purification Unit. This position is located at Metropolitanís Water Quality Laboratory in La Verne, CA.

The primary objective of the Operations Compliance Team and this position will be to ensure 100 percent compliance with all primary drinking water standards in Metropolitanís distribution system and five water treatment plants ranging in capacity from 220 MGD to 750 MGD that utilize conventional treatment with pre-ozonation to treat surface water from the Colorado River Aqueduct and State Water Project. This position will assist beyond regulatory compliance ensuring the water quality-related satisfaction of Metropolitanís customers, member agencies, sub agencies and ultimately drinking water customers.
This position will learn and assist with: reviewing and summarizing operational data to ensure compliance with existing drinking water regulations; providing technical support to the Water Treatment and Conveyance & Distribution Sections to ensure 100 percent compliance with all drinking water standards; performing water chemistry, hydraulics, and/or water treatment process calculations; full-scale evaluations and process optimization studies; providing disinfection requirements and procedures for new installations, repairs, and inspections of water treatment processes and/or distribution system pipelines; performing water chemistry, hydraulics, and/or water treatment process calculations; providing training to treatment and/or distribution system operational staff on water quality topics; and serve on the Treatment Plant and Distribution System Quality Assurance Teams to provide water quality perspective to ensure continued compliance with current and future drinking water regulations.


JOB DUTIES
1. Learn and assist to monitor, evaluate, and respond to water quality related legislative initiatives, regulatory issues and policies. Develop plans and procedures to address legislative and regulatory requirements.
2. Learn and assist to review and make recommendations on proposals, projects, and programs that may have an impact on water quality.
3. Learn and assist to develop and direct test plans for bench pilot and full scale water quality testing.
4. Learn and assist to analyze and interpret data to develop water treatment process design criteria.
5. Learn and assist to analyze and interpret data to optimize water quality performance and maintain compliance with drinking water quality regulations.
6. Learn and assist to analyze and interpret conditions that may adversely impact watershed and source water quality.
7. Learn and assist to review and analyze water quality data and assist in providing recommendations to ensure compliance with all drinking water quality regulations.
8. Learn and assist with planning, coordinating, conducting and monitoring tests, studies, and investigations.
9. Learn and assist to prepare technical documents, reports, and presentation.
10. Learn and assist with technical analyses.
11. Learn and assist to prepare cost estimates and budgets.
12. May execute mathematical, statistical, and other models.
13. Learn and assist with site inspections.
14. Learn and assist with maintaining official records, documents, and data.
15. May participate on a project team.
16. Perform other related Engineer job duties as required.

Working Schedule: 9/80 with alternating Fridays off
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelorís degree from an accredited college or university in a related field by hire date.


A degree in a related field is defined as a degree in Engineering (Civil, Sanitary, Environmental, Mechanical, or Chemical)

 

General Required Knowledge of: Engineering principles and practices in specific discipline (Water Treatment and Water Quality); and current office technology and equipment.

General Required Skills and Abilities to: Analyze and interpret data; organize; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Requirements
- Valid California Driverís License or equivalent from state of residency that allows you to drive in the course of your employment.

Work Environment: The work involves moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines, or irritant chemicals; etc. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.
