The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a consortium of twenty-six cities and water districts that provides drinking water to nearly 19 million people in Southern California. Metropolitanís facilities include the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct, five conventional water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 2.6 billion gallons per day, nine surface water reservoirs, 800 miles of pipeline, and 16 hydroelectric power plants.

SELECTION PROCESS
The Student Interns chosen for these 10 positions will be decided through a lottery process from among the candidates that meet minimum qualifications.

Lodging will not be provided for these positions while working at the reporting location.
JOB SUMMARY
The Water System Operations Group, Operations Support Services Section has ten (10) openings for Temporary Student Interns in the Desert Region Unit. These are temporary positions with the duration of these assignments lasting from end of May/beginning of June 2018 through mid to late August 2018 (depending on school schedules).

These positions are designed to give college or trade school enrolled students the opportunity to gain practical work experience through training, mentoring, and performing assignments, while providing broad exposure to Metropolitanís organizational structure.

The summer student interns will have the opportunity to perform a variety of general maintenance duties that support the strategic plan of delivering water throughout the Colorado River Aqueduct.

JOB DUTIES
ï Assists Metropolitan staff with performing a variety of basic maintenance tasks such as gardening, grounds maintenance, general labor, custodial, painting, weeding, washing vehicles, cleaning facilities and plants, and running errands.
ï May operate Metropolitan vehicles and light equipment.
ï Participates on project teams as required.
ï Performs other related Student Intern Desert job duties as required.

Work Schedule: 4 day work week (6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
(4/4, 4/2) - 4 days on, 4 days off, 4 days on, 2 days off

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience
High school diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate and current enrollment in an accredited college, university or trade school.

Required Knowledge of: How to work in a team environment

Required Skills and Abilities to: Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; operate hand tools; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Certificates, Licenses and Registration Requirements: Valid driverís license from state of residency equivalent to California Class (C) Driver License that allows you to drive in the course of your employment is required at time of application.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS /WORK ENVIRONMENT/VISION REQUIREMENTS
Physical Demands: The work is outdoors in a desert environment. Typically, the employee will work in the heat of the day. Work requires some walking; standing; bending; carrying and use of hand tools such as shovels, racks, weed eaters, wheelbarrows, picks, hammers, saws and driving an automobile, etc.

Work Environment: The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of outdoor environments, e.g., use of safe work practices with avoidance of slips, trips and falls, proper use of hand tools to avoid personal injury, observance of fire regulations, and traffic signals, etc. The work area is outdoors in the summer desert climate and heat.
