The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a consortium of 26 cities and water districts that provides drinking water to nearly 19 million people in Southern California. Metropolitan's facilities include the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct, five water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 2.6 billion gallons per day, nine surface water reservoirs, 800 miles of pipeline, and 16 hydroelectric power plants.
PUBLIC AFFAIRS REPRESENTATIVE II
Metropolitan's External Affairs Group, Media & Communications Section has (1) opening for a Public Affairs Representative II available at its Headquarters in Los Angeles, California.

Metropolitan's integrated communications programs include written, visual, online, print, traditional and social media content and clear messaging to present key water management and related issues in ways that reach many demographic groups, cultural and ethnic communities in Southern California's diverse media market.

You will work with Metropolitan's in-house media services team, other agencies, consultants and external stakeholders to identify, develop, organize, and present information about Metropolitan projects, activities and programs. Your job responsibilities will include preparing and responding to requests for information by English language media outlets and ethnic media, as well as providing informational resources to other public agencies, businesses, stakeholders and the public. You will work with other Metropolitan program staff, including senior management, to plan and create strategic messaging and campaigns using both traditional and online media. Your responsibilities will include drafting and editing press releases; developing talking points; collaborating and preparing content for various print and online publications including reports, newsletters and brochures; incorporating graphics and imagery into work products and social media content; working on multi-media presentations; assisting with web content; coordinating outreach programs and events; and creating original content for display materials. The position entails direct involvement with social media projects involving writing for various platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

In addition to having extensive experience in the areas of work mentioned above, the ideal candidate is bi-lingual (English and Spanish) and has a good working knowledge of the news and visual media industries, current and emerging trends in strategic communications, and water resource management issues.

JOB DUTIES
1. Prepares and delivers presentations to educational, community, and civic groups; assists in coordinating outreach programs.
2. Assists in developing marketing materials such as fliers and letters for distribution to media, member agencies, education, and community outreach organizations.
3. May act as a liaison with Metropolitan's member agencies as related to media, education, and community outreach events and requests.
4. May conduct educational activities and make presentations at conferences, meetings, or events.
5. Responds to requests and inquiries from member agencies and constituents including schools and community organizations; maintains mailing lists.
6. Prepares reports and records participation rates.
7. Assists in coordinating education programs.
8. Assists in preparing and editing news releases and various print and online publications, multimedia presentations, reports, magazines, newsletters, brochures, web updates, speeches, talking points, scripts, and letters to the editor.
9. Tracks quantities of materials and supplies and prepares purchase requests for the support of ongoing and scheduled programs and events.
10. May participate on a project team.
11. Performs other related Public Affairs Representative job duties as required.


WORK SCHEDULE
9/80 (Alternate Fridays off) - This position must be available to work after hours and weekends, as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years relevant experience of which two years of experience must have been at the Public Affairs Representative I level; or a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years relevant experience of which two years of experience must have been at the Public Affairs Representative I level.

Required Knowledge of: Marketing and community outreach through a variety of media; a variety of writing styles and techniques including newspaper, magazine, and corporate; Metropolitan history, mission, issues, programs, projects, and people; principles and practices of public relations; news media operations; research tools, facilities, and methodologies; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations; and current office technology and equipment.

Required Skills and Abilities to: Write clearly, concisely, creatively, and correctly; write to create interest in Metropolitan matters; incorporate Metropolitan goals into various publications; develop and maintain effective communications with the news media; interpret policies and procedures; respond to requests and inquiries from the general public; use independent judgment and exercise discretion; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.

License required: Valid California Class C Driver License that allows you to drive in the course of your employment is required at time of application.
