Duties

These Transportation Assistant positions are located in the Systems Operation Control Section (SOCS), Operations Branch, Flight Operations Division, Office of Law Enforcement/Federal Air Marshal Service (OLE/FAMS), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS). If selected for this position, you will be responsible for performing varying routine, multiple and varied assignments in support of mission scheduling operations, projects, and activities. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Planning, developing and coordinating Federal Air Marshal mission schedules nationwide using both automated and manual processes; ensuring that schedules conform to government regulations, departmental policies, and mission objectives.
  • Coordinating with field offices for the purpose of securing necessary staff resources to meet mission requirements and document changes made to mission schedules within the database and communicate changes.
  • Implementing corrective action to change mission schedules based on such factors as, but not limited to, flight changes, duty reassignments, training schedules, special mission coverage requirements, and other special events.
  • Utilizing multiple database applications in the overall process of planning and coordinating mission schedules to include entering and retrieving data, and the availability of staff resources and flights to meet mission demands, which are time sensitive and require immediate action.
  • Processing and resolving calls from Federal Air Marshals related to discrepancies in airline flight schedules, cancellations, weather and maintenance delays, airport closures, and employee work schedules.
  • Providing training to all SOCS personnel related to database applications, relevant policies and procedures, communication processes, records management, and reservations operations.
  • Developing training curriculum and materials in support of training operations.
  • Developing recommendations and coordinating operational working groups in preparing requirement documents for the OLE/FAMS MSNS program; including recommending changes to division policies to ensure compliance with other Federal government requirements and policies.

Qualifications

To qualify at the SV-F Pay Band (equivalent to GS-9/10), you must have one year of specialized experience at the SV-E Pay Band or GS-8 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Experience interpreting flight status displays, complex travel itineraries, ticketing information, airline confirmation codes, seat maps and airline availability displays; AND
  • Experience applying administrative rules, policies, procedures and requirements regarding airline scheduling system.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

NOTE: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour work week. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
