The Journeyman Apparatus Technician maintains all components associated with the efficient operation of assigned substations and distribution system equipment, both energized and de-energized. This position will perform shop testing and disposal of transformers; repair and testing of re-closers, pad mount switchgear, voltage regulators and capacitors. This position works with the members of the Technical Services section as well as other departments and assists other classifications as directed within the scope of qualifications.

Essential Functions 

  1. Inspects, tests, repairs and calibrates distribution apparatus equipment, including transformers, regulators, capacitors, circuit breakers, re-closers, sectionalizing equipment, motor operators and control equipment.
  2. Documents and completes all pertinent paperwork in appropriate system and maintains equipment records in accordance with local, state and federal agencies.
  3. Maintains shop supplies, parts, material inventories and submits purchase requests as needed to maintain adequate stock levels.
  4. Performs shop replacement of damaged equipment, preventive maintenance or upgrade to such equipment such as bushing replacement, coil size changes, addition of optional devices, filtering or replacement of dielectric oils, painting of equipment tanks, calibration of operating characteristics and acceptance testing, including the numbering and maintenance records of each unit.
  5. Installs settings in relays and shop tests re-closers to verify timing, report results to Sectionalizing Engineer and Supervisor.
  6. Performs testing for PCB’S and oil disposal including arrangement of disposal and testing by certified companies, testing for contamination, containment, and temporary storage. This includes taking oil samples from equipment for testing and analysis.
  7. Assists with field setup and maintenance of mobile substation equipment, control wiring and voltage regulators.
  8. Readily learns new technologies, new equipment and device operating characteristics.
  9. Assists other technicians with their job functions, which include observing safety hazards, around high voltage equipment and during the testing and maintenance of equipment, control wiring, voltage regulators and capacitors.
  10. Performs other duties as required and/or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  1. A high school degree or equivalent with the completion of a formal Journeyman Apprenticeship Program, or have a minimum of five years of experience as Journeyman in an acceptable field.
  2. A current Forklift Certification.
  3. Valid Driver’s License and the ability to acquire a DOT Medical Card
  4. Ability to read staking sheets, drawings, schematics and utility engineering specifications
  5. Training in OSHA safety standards and requirements.
  6. Ability to work overtime, including nights and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. An Associate’s Degree or Technical Degree in applicable field.
  2. Previous Electrical Cooperative experience.

 Physical Demands 

This job operates in a workshop environment and on construction sites, but will occasionally be in close proximity to high voltages in and around substation and overhead lines. This role routinely standard electrical equipment and tools.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position includes exposure to environmental conditions (hot, cold, and inclement weather), electrical meters, fumes or airborne particles, running equipment, and loud noises.  Lifting is frequently required, must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
