The Mechanical Designer will be a key member of the Gillig engineering team and the industries’ leading transit bus manufacturing business. Using design and drafting expertise, this technician will be responsible for the layouts, component part drawings, assemblies, and work instructions, supporting existing and new products. He/she will be expected to operate with a minimal amount of supervision under the direction of CAD Manager while taking design direction from the system or sub system engineer. Assignments are broad in variety and scope.
Key Responsibilities

  • Completes mechanical layouts, routings, and schematics of a complex nature.
  • Designs mechanical components such as brackets, mounting structures, body attachments, etc.
  • Completes mechanical layouts, routings, and schematics to ASME standards.
  • Creates parametric solid models, 2D drawings, component tolerance stackups, and component packaging in a 3D solid model environment.
  • Designs fabrications, extrusions, stampings, and composite structures.
  • Integrates new designs into BOM system providing BOM technicians’ direction on selection criteria.
  • Continually monitors lead times for parts procurement to meet bus production schedule.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Thorough understanding and proficiency of 2D and 3D modeling software
  • Minimum of 5 years of parametric modeling experience AutoCAD Inventor preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of ASME modeling and drafting standards, especially Y14.5
  • Understanding of GD&T dimensioning applications, definitions, and implications
  • Experience designing components for efficient manufacturing and assembly
  • Read and understand mechanical and electrical component and assembly drawings
  • Automotive or commercial vehicle manufacturing industry experience
  • Minimum High School diploma with an Associate or Bachelor degree a plus.
