Duties

This Information Technology (IT) Specialist position is located in the Intelligence Information Systems Engineering Branch of the Classified Technology Division, Office of Information Technology (OIT), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS). If selected for this position, you will be responsible for providing end-user customer service support in performing the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of classified desktop, laptop, hardware and software. Typical assignments include but are not limited to:

  • Applying knowledge of information technology (IT) policies, principles, regulations, and practices to provide support and planning for agency activities and programs.
  • Configuring, operating, and maintaining virtual servers, operating systems, and applications in an enterprise environment.
  • Maintaining video teleconferencing infrastructure, networks, and equipment.
  • Installing and repairing classified desktops, laptops, hardware, and software.
  • Supporting desktop users in a Microsoft Windows environment, including applications such as email and other office productivity tools.
  • Developing and implementing solutions for diverse requirements, problems, and special projects associated with network infrastructure.
  • Applying knowledge of project management principles, methods, and practices to serve as project lead (i.e., developing project plans, schedules, and monitoring and reporting on activities).
  • Applying knowledge of policy and technical requirements for operating and maintaining a classified Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) network.
  • Using evaluative methods (e.g., qualitative and quantitative) to assess and improve systems, management processes, and program effectiveness.

Qualifications

FOR ALL IT POSITIONS: To qualify, you must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.

In addition to the above requirements, to qualify for the SV-I Pay Band (equivalent to GS-13), you must have one year of specialized experience at the SV-H Pay Band or GS-12 in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as: 1.)configuring, operating, and maintaining virtual servers, operating systems, and applications in an enterprise environment; AND 2.) performing the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of classified desktop, laptop, hardware and software.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

NOTE: Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
