Alaska Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)

Palmer, Alaska

TerraSond, a precision geospatial solutions provider based in Palmer, Alaska is currently seeking a Land Surveyor to support its survey efforts in Alaska. The RPLS is responsible for directing surveys and mapping projects from field to finish within required time frames, budgets and contract requirements. He or she verifies the accuracy of collected data, and supervises the preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, progress sketches, records, documents and deliverables related to the survey.

The position requires residence within a reasonable commuting distance from the Palmer, Alaska office and does not include relocation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Aid in planning, organizing and directing survey projects; schedule project in logical steps and budget time and resources required to meet deadlines and profitability targets.

  • Determine appropriate data collection methods to be employed in survey projects
  •  
  • Write operations reports, maintain logs and update records
  •  
  • Negotiate, review and implement contracts and subcontracts
  •  
  • Oversee project logistics to include scheduling staff and coordinating equipment
  •  
  • Requisition, set up and configure data collection instruments required for survey
  •  
  • Operate collection instruments to accumulate required data
  •  
  • Perform calculations to determine survey corrections such as curvature, refractions impact, measurements, traverse closures, adjustments, and tides
  •  
  • Review project contracts to ensure that survey data and results are presented in compliance with contract requirements
  •  
  • Approve assembled cartographic deliverables

Job Specifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety principles and protocols
  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis for detail and meeting deadlines
  • Working knowledge of personal computers including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to plan and execute projects from start to finish in a timely and efficient manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to include strong technical report writing skills

 

Required Background and Experience:

 

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience combined with completed degree, 10 years of work experience, or equivalent combination of work experience and education

 

  • PLS Alaska required for consideration

 

 

  • Experience managing own projects and running crews, communicating well with clients and mentoring junior staff members

 

  • AS/AA or BS/BA in Geomatics, Cartography, Geography, Natural Sciences, Engineering, or other relevant discipline preferred

 

 

Certificated and Licenses Required:

Alaska PLS

Merchant Marine Physical

Candidate must be legally eligible and insurable to drive to regular assignments

Ability to procure a passport

 

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a number of locations including TerraSond’s office, shop and storage facility, boats and various field locations. Some work is performed outdoors and may take place in inclement weather. Requires occasional heavy lifting of equipment (up to 50 pounds). Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, long days, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines.
