The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a consortium of twenty six cities and water districts that provides drinking water to nearly 19 million people in Southern California. Metropolitan's facilities include the 242-mile Colorado River Aqueduct, five conventional water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 2.6 billion gallons per day, nine surface water reservoirs, 800 miles of pipeline, and 16 hydroelectric power plants.

ENGINEER (Environmental)

The Water Systems Operations Group, Operational Safety and Environmental Services Section, currently has one (1) opening for an Engineer (Environmental) in the Environmental Program Support Team. The position is located at our Los Angeles Headquarters, conveniently located next to Union Station.

This Environmental Engineer position will function as an experienced lead engineer responsible for managing environmental permits, plans, studies and reports, and maintaining positive relations with internal customers and outside agencies. The position will work with local, country, state and federal regulatory agencies on complex issues and support a range of projects involving environmental compliance, hazardous waste management, remediation, permitting, and other disciplines.

This position will monitor federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations and issues that may directly or indirectly impact Metropolitan and provide proactive leadership to manage compliance. Also, the position will work under the mentorship and guidance of experienced Scientists and Registered Engineers on environmental compliance projects.

JOB DUTIES

ENVIRONMENTAL
1. Leads, oversees, and prepares environmental, health and safety plans for regulatory compliance.
2. Leads the analyses of new and proposed regulations and legislation; assists in the development of policies, procedures and training materials.
3. Leads in planning, coordinating, and conducting environmental, health and safety audits; may develop mitigating or corrective actions.
4. Leads the evaluation of and, applies for, modifies, and maintains environmental permits; may negotiate permits.

Work Schedule: 9/80; Monday - Friday (alternate Fridays off)

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and six years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level;

OR

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level.

Relevant experience are as follows: Working knowledge of RCRA, CWA, CAA laws and regulations; Hands-on field experience including: environmental sampling, compliance auditing, and environmental investigation; Working with local, county, state and federal regulatory agencies on complex issues; Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat; Preparing, evaluating and negotiating permits and other environmental documents in California.

General Required Knowledge of: Environmental engineering principles, practices and applications; project management principles and practices; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations related to environmental engineering.

General Required Skills and Abilities to: Manage projects; analyze and interpret data; organize; prepare and deliver presentations; prepare technical reports and correspondence; use independent judgment and exercise discretion; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; lead and train; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.

LICENSES REQUIREMENT
Employees in this position are required to obtain and maintain the following:
. Valid California Class C Driver License that allows you to drive in the course of your employment
. License in good standing as a California Professional Engineer
