POSITION SUMMARY: The Carpenter fabricates, constructs, and repairs structural products, woodwork and wood products by following blueprints, drawings, and oral instructions; using hand and power carpentry tools and equipment. The Carpenter may also be assigned to other duties or other specialty responsibility as needed by the Supervisor and Labor Manager, if duly qualified, in conjunction with the union agreement.

The Carpenter reports functionally to the Carpenter Foreman, Field Engineer, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent and administratively to the Labor Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Must obtain a Journeyman’s card from the Union by passing a Journeyman’s test or completing the four (4) year apprenticeship program. This position requires a self-starter who can execute and complete assigned activities. Must be able to take direction and be able to communicate clearly with the Carpenter Foreman or Project Supervisors. Must be capable of learning new technical and non-technical information and applying it in the field in relatively short time periods.

Must be able to work day/evenings/weekends.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to work near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt. Ability to bend, stoop, and climb stairs; carry and lift items weighing 45 pounds and over; reach above shoulders; and use tools involving manipulation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Produce Carpentry Products and Services by:

  • Following construction standards, company procedures, and safety standards
  • Measuring results against construction standards and established practices
  • Making necessary adjustments as needed and deemed necessary
  • Solving problems – if carpenter cannot solve issues, he/she will present them to his/her manager

Determine material requirements and dimensions, structure, or fixture to be fabricated by:

  • Must be able to read, understand and communicate information from construction drawings and specifications to perform the required work
  • Must apply learned skills daily and continue to seek ways to perfect his/her trade
  • Able and willing to continue his/her education through classes and training 

Safety

  • Maintain safe and clean working environment
  • Comply with company procedures, safety rules, and OSHA & COE safety regulations
  • Immediately inform supervisor or manager of unsafe conditions
  • Comply with federal, state, and local building codes and adherence to the requirements
  • Advise management on needed safety actions
  • Ensures safe operation of carpentry equipment by inspecting them before use, performing preventive maintenance requirements; troubleshooting problems or requesting that repairs are made to the tools and equipment

Maintain Carpentry Supplies Inventory

  • Check stock to determine inventory level
  • Preplan for the work and anticipate needed supplies
  • Verify quantities for receiving of materials and supplies
  • Conserve carpentry resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results and reduce waste
  • Maintain care of tools to accomplish job, including locking them up after shift completion

Prepare Layout

  • Follow carpentry procedures and established layout dimensions for fabrication of counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, etc.
  • Construct, repair, and install structures, enclosures, formwork, doors, fixture, protection etc. as needed and requested
  • Ensure Construction quality by verifying trueness of structure

Other

  • Attend Grunley in-house training as required
  • Comply with all Grunley, contract, building owner, and client requirements at all times
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results in a timely manner
  • Conduct themselves in a good and professional manner; maintain a lifestyle concurrent with security requirements companywide. Always be a good representative of the company while performing duties.
  • Be on time; adhere to company work rules and standards at all times
  • Comply with the company Handbook
