The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for 2 Lieutenants for the Department of Public Safety.

Job Description:

Under direct supervision of the Deputy Director of Public Safety, plans, organizes, oversees, and coordinates the daily activities of a designated operational entity of the Public Safety Department. Manages supervisory personnel and contract officers who provide personal, real property, and equipment security throughout campus, ensuring consistent and equitable enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and university regulations. Reviews and approves reports on incident and crime investigations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage day to day operations, direct and prioritize the work activities of all assigned personnel including Sergeants and contract officers assigned to FIT; review post assignments; oversee deployment of personnel; review all daily incident reports; and conduct incident investigations and prepare written report.
     
  • Supervise special events including the coordination with the New York Fire and Police Departments; prepare security, safety, crowd control, and emergency evacuation plans in consultation with appropriate college staff.
     
  • Participate in the planning process for major activities on campus identifying the security and safety issues for projects such as building renovation, construction, contractors or vendors performing work, etc.
     
  • Supervise and monitor time and leave usage in accordance with FIT policy; verify attendance, sick leave excuses and lateness; coordinate staffing for mobilizations; and assure that time charges are accurate and documented.
     
  • Prepare performance evaluations for review and approval by the Director, initiate disciplinary action when necessary; implement disciplinary proceedings with the approval of the Director.
     
  • Perform special assignments and duties as required.
     
  • Assist subordinates in performance of duties; reviews cases with subordinates as appropriate, and provides guidance and direction.

Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent, Associates degree in Criminal Justice or related field is preferred. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible law enforcement, public safety or related field experience. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. At least 3 years of supervisory experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Valid NYS Driver's license with a serviceable driving record. Valid NYS Security Guard license. Current NY state peace officer certification, or the ability to obtain peace officer certification within 12 months of hire preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge and understanding of police protocols, procedures, and methodology.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

Additional Information:

FLSA-exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Night and weekend work may be required. FIT will not entertain New York Retirement and Social Security Law (RSSL) 211 waivers for this position. Please Note: NY State residency and citizenship necessary for NY State Peace Officer certification.

Salary: Based on experience

Satisfactory completion of a background check and verification of all educational and experience information is required. Related work experience at an urban college/university preferred.
