JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Distribution Designer is primarily responsible for the field design, staking of all major work plan projects and the overhead and underground primary line extensions to individual customers and developers. This position ensures design is compliant with Rural Utility Services (RUS) specifications and the National Electric Safety Codes. This position reports to the Supervisor, Distribution Design and works with design personnel and other departments as directed. The Cooperative supports a positive work environment that emphasizes the Company’s current mission statement and core values.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Senior Distribution Designer is responsible for the following functions, including but not limited to:

  1. Design and stake projects, including major projects and system improvements, overhead and underground primary facilities (including replacements), subdivisions as required, joint-use attachments and make-ready construction, and secondary extensions to customers.
  • Draw design staking sheets using Trico’s automated staking software and computer aided drafting (CAD) software.
  • Create and compile system maps using GIS Mapviewers, CAD software, PDF Editors, automated staking software, outside mapping resources such as PimaMaps, MapGuide and GoogleEarth.
  • Size and determine the route and location of Trico facilities for residential and commercial line extensions or services, including new subdivisions.
  • Stake new facility locations and proposed routes for new extensions and system improvement projects, and include the field inventory of existing Trico facilities and joint-use attachments.
  • Utilize Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and GPS software for field data collection and data processing to determine the geographic location of proposed and existing Trico facilities.

  2. Maintain good Member relations to mitigate, track, and solve customer requests, problems or     complaints.

  • Determine cost estimates for member extensions, developers, builders, and Trico system improvement projects.
  • Utilize the Trico work order tracking system and updates work activity regularly.
  • Provide technical assistance related to customer questions and/or complaints, electric service requirements, and     construction standards.
  • Stake and design service upgrades, line relocations, line conversions, remediation of hazard conditions, safety code infringements and Trico rules violations.

   3. Execute work according to good engineering practices and Trico standards.

  • Size transformers for services to industrial, commercial, residential and subdivision loads.
  • Keep informed on latest techniques and devices for improved system performance.
  • Compile data and maps for system planning and studies utilizing automated mapping and CAD software.
  • Coordinate with the Right-of-way department for easement drawings and plan details, as needed for acquisition of permits, easements, rights-of-ways, licenses, and special crossings
  • Understand and apply National Electric Safety Codes, Trico Standards and Trico Rules, Regulations and Line Extension Policy to design work and projects.
  • Complete final review of project work orders.
  • Make diligent effort to complete work order “as builts” regularly and in a timely fashion.

  4. Design feeders, taps, extensions, and spine systems for underground installations in subdivisions,                                       commercial plazas industrial parks, and master planned developments.

  • Responsible for calculating all distribution installation costs related to subdivisions, commercial plazas, industrial     parks, spine systems, extensions, and master planned  development projects.
  • Correspond with Cities, Towns and Counties etc. regarding subdivision platting reviews, comments, easement additions, and approvals.
  • Meet with developers, engineering firms, and contractors to initiate, design, resolve conflicts, and coordinate subdivision design.
  • Attend pre-construction meetings and coordinate with Trico's construction department through the construction phase as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The Senior Distribution Designer must have the following minimum qualifications:

  1. A High School degree plus one year of related courses such as design, surveying and/or mapping.  
  2. A minimum of four (4) years’ increasingly responsible experience in drafting, surveying, electric distribution design, mapping and related fields.
  3. Proficient with computer aided drafting (preferably AutoCAD 2D), mechanical design, calculation and trigonometry.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) specifications (or equivalent electric distribution utility standards of construction), construction units, and National Electric Safety Codes.
  5. Ability to work with minimal supervision and work irregular and/or overtime hours as duties may require.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed primarily outdoors and requires the ability to move, lift and carry various types of survey equipment. The environment may be dusty and dirty around construction sites.

The job requires the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time up to 60% of the time. The job also involves 30% bending, squatting, crouching kneeling, pushing/pulling, and reaching.

The individual must be able to reach overhead, climb ladders, lift in awkward positions, and move consistently on his/her feet 30% of the time. Frequently the position requires lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds from a floor to waist to overhead level, and occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds from the floor or waist level overhead. The position requires extensive fine finger dexterity, including simple and firm grasping, fine manipulation and repetitive movements using both hands.
