TerraSond, a precision geospatial solutions provider based in Palmer, Alaska is currently seeking a Boat Operator to support its survey efforts in Alaskan waters. This position would be a full time seasonal position. The Boat Operator is responsible for the safe and effective operation and navigation of TerraSond vessels and may serve as a liaison to chartered vessels. He or she oversees personnel and vessel safety, documentation, maintenance, crew training and ensuring that TerraSond Limited is in compliance with all applicable state and federal rules and regulations. The Boat Operator assists with vessel, facility, and vehicle maintenance and performs additional duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Operate vessel as directed by Party Chief or Survey Technician
    • Arrange for vessels to be fueled, restocked with supplies, and/or repaired
    • Examine vessels (including equipment and systems) to detect damage, wear, or malfunction
    • Perform routine vessel maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery
    • Effect vessel repairs personally, with staff or through contractors as is appropriate
    • Prioritize as follows: human safety, vessel safety, mission accomplishment
    • Stop all observed unsafe behavior
    • Prepare a daily voyage plan and communicate that plan to all embarked
    • Conduct and record required drills
    • Provide vessel induction to all persons onboard
    • Maintain records of vessel activities, review vessel safety and wheelhouse log books for USCG and company compliance

Job Specifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety principles and protocols
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of the maritime industry including rules and regulations, USCG protocols, and vessel maintenance and repair.
  • Strong organizational skills with an emphasis for detail and meeting deadlines
  • Working knowledge of vessel operations, systems and mechanics, including design, repair, and maintenance
  • Working knowledge of personal computers including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to plan and execute projects from start to finish in a timely and efficient manner
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement and/or cost savings and implement appropriate solutions

           

            Required Background and Experience:

  • Expert knowledge and proven experience in safe and effective vessel operation
  • Extensive knowledge of vessel maintenance and mechanics
  • Working knowledge of diesel and gas engine mechanics
  • Working knowledgeable U.S. Coast Guard regulation pertaining to the vessel assigned
  • Candidate must be legally eligible and insurable to drive to regular assignments

 

Certificated and Licenses Required:

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • United States Merchant Marine, Master of Steam and Motor Vessels (Inland and Near Coastal) 50 GRT or greater
  • Radar observer
  • Merchant Marine Physical

 

Working Conditions:

 

Work is performed in a number of locations including TerraSond’s shop and storage facility, boats and various field locations. Some work is performed outdoors and may take place in inclement weather. Requires occasional heavy lifting of equipment (up to 50 pounds). Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, long days, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines. Travel to, as well as operation and transport of vessels required
