Firefighter Trainee

DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide fire protection, rescue and emergency services in order to protect life and property.   This is accomplished by answering calls, providing emergency medical services, hazardous materials responses, completing firefighting and rescue activities, investigating scenes, providing public education, and inspecting and testing plans and equipment.   Additional duties include maintaining the fire station, conducting tours, inspecting equipment, inspecting building and completing related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The written examination will be administered Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. at the Multi-Purpose Events Center (MPEC), located at 1000 5th Street. The exam will be open to candidates, who have made a proper application and have met the requirements of Chapter 143 of the Local Government code for beginning position in the Fire Department. Individuals who score a minimum of 70 on the written exam will be invited to participate in the Physical Ability Test immediately after the written exam. This academy will not require individuals to be EMT-Basic Certified at the start of the Academy, however, Emergency Medical Training - Basic Certification will be the first module. Those trainees who do not pass the National Registry for EMT-Basic will be released from employment.

 

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

 Applicants for this class must meet such physical and other requirements as established by the Civil Service Commission.

  • Achieve a minimum passing score of seventy (70) percent on the written civil service entry examination.
  • Successfully complete the physical ability test as prescribed by the Fire Department and approved by the Commission, as found in Attachment 1 to these Rules, demonstrating the applicant is physically capable of performing the essential job functions for the position of Firefighter.
  • Pass a background investigation.
  • Pass Ergometric screening. (Ergomentric is an optional process which is administered at the Fire Chief’s discretion.)
  • Pass Fire Chief’s interview.
  • Successfully complete a post-job offer psychological examination and medical examination that includes a visual acuity test and physician certification that the applicant is not dependent on and does not use illegal drugs or misuse legal drugs.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and not more than thirty-five (35) years of age on date of hire. Estimated Academy start date August 3, 2015.
  • Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have an equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Have a valid Texas driver's license within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Be a citizen of the United States by birth or naturalization.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a National Registry Certification as EMT-Basic.
