The Engineering Services Group, Infrastructure Reliability Section, Infrastructure Unit has one (1) opening for an Engineering Technician I in the Materials and Metallurgy Team at our facility in La Verne, California.

JOB SUMMARY

The Materials and Metallurgy Team is seeking a highly-motivated individual with materials testing and coating experience.  The team is responsible for materials testing and evaluations, developing materials/coatings design criteria for engineering plans and specifications, performing field investigations of water treatment and distribution infrastructure, performing condition assessments and fitness-for-service of a wide array of mechanical and structural equipment used in the treatment, conveyance, and distribution of drinking water.  Other activities include performing quality assurance inspections of surface preparation, coating, sealants, and roofing components.  Materials testing will be performed in a laboratory environment or in actual in-process field conditions.  All other work is a combination of office, field, and shop work.

JOB DUTIES

Job duties for this position include assisting in the performance of corrosion investigations and failure analysis of equipment; performing materials testing and evaluations of materials used in water treatment, conveyance, distribution, and hydroelectric power generation, including protective coatings, elastomers, plastics, and composites per ASTM, NACE, SSPC, or other relevant specifications; assisting in evaluating equipment for fitness-for-service and developing alternative solutions to repair and/or rehabilitate equipment to meet MWD's service requirements; learning and utilizing various test instruments and databases to accomplish and document the above.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:  High school diploma or general education development test (GED), and two years of accredited college or university in engineering and two years of relevant experience.

General Required Knowledge of:  Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry; design principles; technical research, analysis and report preparation; and current office equipment and technology.

Corrosion Required Knowledge of:  Corrosion science.

General Required Skills and Abilities to:  Perform calculations; read plans, specifications and drawings; use current office equipment and technology; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.

Corrosion Required Skills and Ability to: Learn to test and assess infrastructure and equipment.

Licenses

* Valid California Class C Driver License or its equivalent in your state of residence that allows you to drive in the course of your employment
