1.Completed Basic Academy training in the state of California.
2.Completed the Adult Corrections Officer Basic Academy Supplemental Course (also referred to as the 832 Penal Code Course) in the state of California.
3.Achieved a passing score on the California Board of State and Community Corrections written examination for Adult Corrections Officer.
4.Completed one year at the level of a Correctional Deputy I or equivalent.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under supervision, Correctional Deputy II's supervise inmates and are expected to work according to assignments, applying rules, regulations, and procedures in the daily 24-hour operation of detention facilities. Expanded duties include supervising the security and conduct of inmates in housing units, in movement, and in institutional activities; reception, booking, and processing of incoming inmates; issuing clothing and supplies to inmates in housing; meal supervision; maintenance of work and operational records and documents; conducting area and personal searches of inmates; inspecting and directing cleaning operations for facility sanitation and safety; promoting positive attitudes among inmates through instruction and discipline; investigation of incidents and crimes within the facility; assisting medical and psychiatric staff in inmate management; participation in programs preparing inmates for release; care and control of institutional property; processing inmate discharges, release, and performing related duties as required.

ABOUT THE WORK ENVIRONMENT

Sonoma County is recruiting Correctional Deputies who are willing to work inside housing units supervising inmates and their activities. The harshness of the traditional jail style has been replaced by a "New Generation/Direct Supervision Jail Facility". Therefore, demands are placed on professional correctional staff to develop interpersonal communication skills and management style approaches to dealing with inmates.
 
These positions are located at the Main Adult Detention Facility, a 24-hour operation, and requires the ability to work shift assignments including nights, weekends, and holidays. Incumbents in this classification may be designated as peace officers under PC 830.1(c) and must meet the requirements as identified under the minimum qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable General Education Development Certificate. Successful completion of the Basic Jails Operations/Adult Institutions course, and all other mandated training required for journey level correctional officers by the California Board of State and Community Corrections. Fulfillment of this requirement is done by 1) completing the Basic Academy requirement, 2) successfully completing the Adult Corrections Officer Basic Academy Supp Course (832 PC Course) and 3) passing a California Board of State and Community Corrections or equivalent written examination upon entry level as a Corrections Officer. One year of work experience with an adult correctional institution in a position equivalent to that of a Correctional Deputy I with Sonoma County is also required.
 
License: Possession of a valid California license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required to perform the essential job functions of the position.
 
Special Qualifications: Willingness to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on any assigned work shift.
 
Citizenship Requirement: Permanent resident aliens who wish to be employed as peace officers must apply for citizenship prior to application for such employment. Permanent resident aliens must cooperate with the U.S. Department of Immigration in meeting all requirements for U.S. citizenship. If a permanent resident alien has not obtained citizenship within three years after application for employment or is denied citizenship, he or she shall be disqualified for peace officer status.
 
Background Requirement: Incumbents shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state or any other state in any federal jurisdiction, or of any offense in any other state or in any federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state, nor be under current formal probation supervision.
