Position Description: The University of Iowa (UI) Libraries seeks an innovative, analytic, and accomplished professional for the position of Web Services Specialist in the Libraries’ Information Technology Department (LIT). The Web Services Specialist plays a key role in providing an outstanding library experience for the University’s students, faculty, and staff. This position works closely with Libraries’ staff and developer staff in LIT to build, modify, test, debug, manage, and troubleshoot web applications to improve the Libraries’ virtual user experience on a variety of platforms, including mobile devices.

 

Reporting to the Head of Library Information Technology, the Web Services Specialist provides primary web application support, working with staff throughout the Libraries to focus on services that improve the user experience and ensures the Libraries’ web presence complies with ADA accessibility guidelines. This position participates in needs assessment to provide user-centered solutions that reflect a thorough understanding of the University community’s library and research needs. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain the UI Libraries’ website including branch, departmental and mobile sites.
  • Manage and extend the library’s CMS – WordPress - through custom modules, theme, and template development. Train and provide staff support for resources used in website maintenance.
  • Ensure Libraries’ websites meet web accessibility standards.
  • Update information in pages and databases so that content and links are kept current and up to date.
  • Design and maintain various interactive forms and web-searchable databases.
  • Gather and analyze web usage statistics using a variety of tools.
  • Create and maintain library blogs.
  • Manage and provide technical support to staff for Springshare products including LibGuides, LibCal and LibAnswer.
  • Participate in needs assessments of library users to identify application development opportunities.
  • Participate in usability testing and other assessments to inform initiatives that improve the user experience.
  • Review and evaluate existing applications to identify and recommend opportunities for improvement.
  • Research emerging web technologies and evaluate their potential for use within the Libraries’ web environment.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, information science, computer science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two or more years’ experience with web page development including user interface design and functional analysis.
  • Knowledge of methods for gathering user needs in order to produce user-centered solutions.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of user interface design across a wide variety of platforms, including mobile devices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web accessibility issues and tools used to ensure compliance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a research library
  • Knowledge of the Springshare suite of web applications
  • WordPress or other content management system development experience (themes, plugins, etc.)
  • Experience with Google Analytics or other web usage statistics gathering software

 

Salary and appointment: Appointment will be made at the level of Application Developer at a salary in the range of $48,671 - $52,000. Start date is negotiable.
