CURRICULUM VITAE

Qualification: PhD Research Scholar

Summary :

I took up PhD in Biochemistry at University of Madras in after completing M.Sc in Zoology from University of Calcutta. I did my research on the regulatory role of Vitamin A derivative retinoid x receptor on human Gastric cancer. I have met with success in proving that the above-mentioned receptor helps in restricting growth of gastric cancer and there is evidence that it may also help in treating patients for eradication of the same. I have submitted my thesis in September .

Details of Thesis :

Reason for selection of subject

At present, gastric cancer is the second most common cancer after lung malignancy. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that this disease accounted for , deaths in . Survival from gastric cancer is poor which reflects in the high mortality rate of the disease (-%). The risk of gastric cancer varies among the countries and populations in the Asia-Pacific region. The following are the two reasons which led to selection of this field of research :-

• High-risk areas include East Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea, while low-risk areas include countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and India (but rates of cancer is changing because of ongoing economic development, increase in life expectancy and rise in adaptation of a western life style). The age-specific incidence and mortality rates show a strong increase after the age of , reaching the highest values in the ages -.

• Compared to other countries, gastric cancer incidence rates are moderate to low in India; although certain areas, such as in and around Chennai, have very high rates. Some recent case-control studies in Mumbai and Trivandrum found that consumption of dried fish, rice, spicy food, chili, and high-temperature food increased the risk.

It was felt that there is a significant possibility that the incidence of this disease could be on the rise in times to come due to the two reasons given. However, due to current low incidence not much work has been done in this area and it was felt that it would be useful to extend work done to the next level.
