Ph. D Thesis: ABSTRACT

Use of Bio Indicators for Heavy Metal Pollution Studies
In The Coastal Marine Environment of Visakhapatnam,
Andhra Pradesh, India

Marine pollution is a serious threat to the marine organisms like fish, crab etc. which are components of human food chain. Visakhapatnam coast is highly polluted with heavy metals that enter through industrial effluents. To understand the cumulative problem of metal pollution in marine environment. A study was undertaken to detect the concentration of selected heavy metals such as Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) in marine water, sediment and marine crab (as bio-indicator of the present study), and their biochemical effects (changes in Carbohydrate, Lipid and Proteins) in the muscle tissue of marine crab in 12 selected sites (11 experimental and 1 control) of Visakhapatnam coastal region in premonsoon, monsoon and postmonsoon periods.
