ENGINEER (Electrical)

The Engineering Services Group, Program Management Section, currently has one (1) opening for an Engineer (Electrical) in the Program Management Unit located at our Union Station facility.

Positions at this level are recognized as technical specialists using initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods or researching trends and patterns to develop new methods, criteria, or proposed new policies. The technical specialists act as project leaders.

This position will be responsible for the management of multiple electrical power system projects within Metropolitan's Capital Investment Plan which includes facility upgrades, repairs and rehabilitation. Facilities include high voltage transmission lines, pumping plants, power distribution, auxiliary power systems, switchyards, transformers, standby generators and protection relays. 

Typical responsibilities include: Leading interdisciplinary teams assigned to programs and projects; ensuring compliance with project and customer requirements; leading and preparing engineering investigations and economic studies of engineering projects; leading and developing project budgets and schedules; forecasting cash flow for program and projects; and Developing, negotiating and administering consulting contracts for professional engineering services.

Other responsibilities include: Developing project justifications and preparing letters and presentations to the Metropolitan Board of Directors; Defining project work scopes; Monitoring expenditures, schedules, quality, and reporting; Providing technical leadership during the conceptual and preliminary design phases; Providing project management leadership during the preliminary design, final design, and construction phases; Coordinating with other internal groups to ensure project goals and objectives are addressed; Identifying and coordinating the need for environmental assessment; Delivering presentations on projects to Metropolitan management; Preparing regular status reports on assigned projects; Utilizing various software to obtain and present project data; and Preparing project management plans and preliminary design reports, and study and investigation reports.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (Alternate Fridays off)

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Requirements

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and six years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level; OR

Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Associate Engineer level.

General Required Knowledge of:

Engineering principles, practices and applications in specific discipline; project management principles and practices; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations related to area of responsibility; project management; and current office technology and equipment. 

General Required Skills and Abilities to:

Manage projects; analyze and interpret data; organize; engineering and project scheduling software; prepare and deliver presentations; prepare technical reports and correspondence; use independent judgment and exercise discretion; problem solve; prioritize and multi-task; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and in a team environment; lead and train; and operate current office equipment including computers and supporting applications.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this position are required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations:

Licenses

* Valid California Class C Driver License that allows you to drive in the course of your employment

* License in good standing as a California Professional Engineer

        * Large scale water distribution system project design and operation with an emphasis on electrical equipment;

        * Public works construction concepts and techniques.

        * Engineering project management concepts and techniques, including scoping, budgeting, benchmarking, scheduling, 

           negotiating, estimating, and planning; status reporting; project controls; project team building; conflict resolution; and

           leading project staff.
