Job Description:
Currently, the Facilities Division has an open position for a Construction Manager who will provide coordination and oversight of construction projects for the Laboratory. The Construction Manager works under the guidance of one or more Project Managers on multiple construction projects.
Required Duties:
- Coordinate, and supervise construction activities to modify office, laboratory and industrial type research buildings, utilities, equipment and exterior facilities at Berkeley Lab
- Ensure execution of construction project phases are completed safely. Ensure all workers have the required Laboratory safety training and are following all Federal, State, and local environmental and safety rules
- Oversee and coordinate construction teams, which include use of sub-contractors and internal crafts
- Manage sub-contracted construction work as determined by Project Managers, including preparation for contract modifications
- Submit progress reports which include schedule and cost updates to Project Managers
- Coordinate construction with site safety inspectors, building managers and facilities inspection group, keeping all concerned advised of schedules and status
- Develop construction completion schedules and material delivery requirements, verify work performed and analyze and recommend progress payments
- Develop and evaluate project construction estimates; review plans and specifications for constructability, operability, maintainability & cost effectiveness
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of projects including plans, specifications, schedules, approvals, effort levels and costs, etc.
- Work closely and communicate effectively with Berkeley Lab Managers, Project Managers, Scientist and Engineers, crafts and maintenance Supervisors, Construction Managers and other staff
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of Construction Management experience (or combination of degree in Engineering or related field and Construction Management work) in a complex industrial plant or laboratory facility with multiple buildings is essential
- Extensive experience and knowledge of building and construction maintenance and crafts -including carpentry, HVAC, electrical, painting, general maintenance and labor, etc.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills and time management skills
- Strong knowledge of applicable building codes; working knowledge of the regulations associated with asbestos abetment (EPA & CAL OSHA), UBC and Fire Code; understanding of biological and chemical hazards and construction safety consistent with OSHA, NEC etc. standards
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team
- Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record-keeping and communication purposes
- Ability to produce drawings as required by projects
- This is a field position with physical requirements: ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds; work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights; ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, manual dexterity in both hands; must use protective clothing, safety equipment and respirators when required; ability to distinguish colors
- Must have a valid California Driver's License
- General understanding of major environmental, health and safety protection mandates and regulations (e.g. RCRA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, CERCLA and DOE Orders) is a plus
