Data Storage Engineer

ITS, Systems & Platforms

 

Systems & Platforms, a department of Information Technology Services at The University of Iowa, has an opening for a Storage Engineer in the Enterprise Storage Team. This position will be filled as System Administration & System Programming Level II (PC37, pay grade 9), Level III (PC38, pay grade 11) or Level IV (PC39, pay grade 13) based on qualifications of the successful candidate, and will report to the Enterprise Storage Manager.

 

The University’s enterprise storage infrastructure includes SAN/NAS storage devices spanning multiple data centers, with Fibre Channel SAN fabrics, Brocade directors and switches, multiple EMC CLARiiON storage systems, and a Network Appliance FAS storage system.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Administer enterprise SAN/NAS storage systems, including installation, configuration, software upgrades, and storage provisioning

·         Administer Fibre Channel SAN fabrics, including installation, configuration, zoning, software upgrades, and maintenance of switches

·         Evaluate, recommend, plan for and implement new storage systems and technologies

·         Assist with planning and implementing disaster recovery/business continuity solutions for enterprise services, and identify potential infrastructure improvements

·         Create and maintain system scripts and programs to support the operations of the storage systems

·         Troubleshoot performance and connectivity issues with storage systems, Fibre Channel SAN, and IP storage networking

·         Advise the Enterprise Storage Manager and other campus IT staff regarding technical storage issues

·         Consult with server administrators for SAN attached hosts

·         Share 24x7 on-call support

 

Basic Qualifications:

·         A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science or related field, and experience supporting SAN/NAS storage systems and/or Unix, Windows, or VMware servers in multi-user environments (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

·         Experience supporting IT services to meet availability requirements

·         Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills

·         Ability to analyze and understand complex technical issues

·         Attention to detail and an ability to anticipate technical obstacles

·         Ability to prioritize work with a focus on organizational goals and directions

·         Technical curiosity and a desire to learn about new technologies and practices

·         Aptitude for independently identifying and resolving problems

 

Desirable Additional Qualifications:

·         Experience supporting EMC CLARiiON and NetApp FAS storage systems

·         Experience supporting Brocade Fibre Channel directors and switches

·         Experience supporting AIX, Red Hat Linux, VMware, and Windows servers

·         Knowledge of and experience supporting Tivoli Storage Manager

·         Experience working in higher education environments

 

To be eligible for the Level II classification, a candidate will typically have:

·         A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science or related field, and 3-5 years experience supporting SAN/NAS storage systems and/or Unix, Windows, or VMware servers (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

 

To be eligible for the Level III classification, a candidate will typically have:

·         A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science or related field, and 5-7 years experience supporting SAN/NAS storage systems and/or Unix, Windows, or VMware servers (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

·         Experience designing, planning and deploying systems to meet user requirements

·         Experience troubleshooting complex technical problems

·         Ability to lead technical project teams

 

To be eligible for the Level IV classification, a candidate will typically have:

·         A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science or related field, and 7-10 years experience supporting SAN/NAS storage systems and/or Unix, Windows, or VMware servers (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)

·         Experience supporting systems in an enterprise environment

·         Extensive knowledge of storage systems and storage networking protocols

·         Experience designing and/or implementing business continuance/disaster recovery solutions

·         Experience with one or more programming and scripting languages

·         Ability to independently manage complex technical projects

·         Experience with or a commitment to promoting diversity in the work environment
