Resume Tips

Your resume is most often the first impression you make with a prospective employer.  Make sure it is easy to read, accurate, and reflects the very best qualities you bring to the table.

Font Matters
When emailing a resume make sure the font and type size you select are compatible with viewing on a mobile device as well as a computer screen.  People will often make the font way too small to be viewed on different devices. If a recruiter has to print out your resume in order to view it, chances are they will not pay much attention to it. Email yourself a copy of your resume in order to make sure the font is big enough and clear enough for on-screen viewing.

Include your Email
Make sure your personal email is also included on your resume. We receive hundreds of resumes a week and many will include the name, address and phone number but no email.  This is especially important for recruiters or hiring managers that print out your resume.

Save as a PDF
We also suggest you use a PDF format when sending out your resume. A PDF format is compatible with most software programs used by recruiters and hiring managers. PDF’s present a clean look and can’t be edited by those receiving the document.

Be Accurate
Make sure the dates and facts on your resume are one hundred percent accurate. One candidate we worked with indicated that she graduated from the University of Indiana. It turns out she was two credits short. Because this was fifteen years ago she assumed this was a fact that could be overlooked. The company found out she lied on her resume and did not offer her the job.

Take Care in Selecting References
Take extra care in selecting references as background checks used today are growing more and more sophisticated. Firms will typically ask you to provide both personal and professional references. Be prepared for them to source references on their own. One firm we have dealt with went as far as contacting a candidate’s sorority sisters from fifteen years ago. Some clients will even run a background check before they even interview you.
