The First Interview

“She who asks the questions controls the conversation”   Your initial interview can be your most important interview. Keep four things in mind as you enter this process:

Understanding: Try to begin the interview by asking good questions and gaining an understanding of the firm’s overall business plan along with the scope and responsibilities of the position. Determine what is working for them and what the challenges are.

Connection: In most cases a firm is not looking for the candidate to come in and reinvent the wheel. Much like a professional football team, they already know the type of offense they want to run. Do you fit into this offense? Do you agree with how they are running the firm? Have you been successful in this type of program/offense in the past? Convey to the hiring manager that you have operated in a similar offense and site examples how you have been successful. Draw a connection between your experiences and the firm’s needs.

Solution: Once you understand the firm’s business plan and establish a connection, illustrate and give examples of how you would provide the solu- tion to their needs and objectives.

Close: If you are interested in the opportunity, let the hiring manager know! “Is there anything in this conversation that we have not covered that would prohibit me from moving forward in the process? If so let’s talk about it, because I want to move forward!”
